NEWS: Rian Johnson's Next Project...
So, with the release of his newest film, The Brothers Bloom, Rian Johnson has set his sights on a long "dead" genre of film. Time Travel...Thanks to Coming Soon for the info...
The Brothers Bloom writer/director Rian Johnson has set a new project, a time-travel thriller titled Looper that again will see the filmmaker seek to reinvent a familiar genre.
The project will team Johnson with producer Ram Bergman, who produced Johnson's previous two films, with the pair eyeing a 2009 start date. Johnson again will direct from his own script.
Looper is set in a present-day world in which a group of hitmen are sent their victims from the future.
Outside of the brilliant film, Primer, the Time Travel Thriller genre has been pretty much dead. Sure, there was Donnie Darko which picked up with the emo set, but that cult is way over my head, as the film did nothing for me, however, with Rian Johnson comes one of the most interesting and best young directors we've got. Brick was his first feature, and reinvented the film noir, by tossing the hard boiled world in an every day highschool, and it was the best film of 2005, in my humble opinion. We have the Brothers Bloom coming out in a month or two, and again, he goes to another genre, the con flick, and it looks like it's going to be another winner. So, to hear he wants to go into time travel, has me really interested in seeing what he will do.
What about you? What do you think of Johnson and his previous works? What about Time Travel movies? What are some of your favorites?
