TRAILER: Chageling...

So, we've seen the release of the trailer for Oscar bait film, The Soloist, so to follow, te people over at Universal have released the first trailer for the hotly anticipated film, Changeling. The film stars Angelina Jolie, John Malkovich and Jeffery Donovan who most may know as the guy who kidnapped Alex in CSI: Miami, or as the main character in the grossly underrated show, Burn Notice. It tells the story of a mother, Christine Collins, whose son is kidnapped, and later found. However, suspicions that the child that was found may not be her true son arise. The film is directed by legendary film maker/actor Clint Eastwood and looks like it will be one hell of a good film. Here's the trailer...

What are your thoughts? To me, the period looks completly sold, the cast is great, Eastwood is a master film maker, and the story looks to be really compelling. It has a little darker of a tone, at least in the feel and composition of the shots that we've seen, and is a great contrast to the Soloist trailer that I thought was a bit glossy. This film is really pretty to look at, but it's got darker feel, and the story should play right into that. I'm always a sucker for a good and compelling thriller.

What are your thoughts?

Wanted...

Alright, so I had a little vacation this weekend. Relaxed, hung out with some freinds from college, swam, camped, and got my face kicked in by a certain Angelina Jolie vehicle. Wanted comes to us from acclaimed Russian director, Timur Bekmambatov, whose "Watch" series (Night Watch, Day Watch, and the currently in post production Twilight Watch) are the highest grossing films in Russian history. This is his first English language film, and stars Angelina Jolie, and my boy, James McAvoy. Now, does this pedigree equal a solid film?

Wanted is the story of a young guy, Wesley Gibson, who is stuck in his dull life, which includes back stabbing best buddies, cheating girlfriends, bitchy bosses, a rather boring job, and a father who was the greatest assassin the world had ever known. Now, that last part is discovered by our hero in the begining of the film, and send his life in to a spiral. He discovers that his father was part of a group of assassins known as the Fraternity, led by Morgan Freeman's Sloan. They "restore the balance of power in anyway they need to". Once this is discovered, Wesley begins to train to find and kill the man who offed his father. However, things don't go to plan and this film has it's fair share of twists. It also has it's fair share of enjoyable moments, and keeps you in, and on the edge of your seat.

First, this film is based on a graphic novel of the same name, that is not all that similar to the film. After dinner the night I saw the film, I had the chance to take a gander to take a look at the source material, and was rather turned off by how mysoginistic and over the top violent that the novel was. The film only took the names and the very basic plot line from the graphic novel, and it's a great thing, because if they had stayed extremely faithfull, like say, 300 (which I despise), it would have been to much and not nearly as fun. The film really is a kick to the mouth. It's like watching a fireworks show (thank you Clover). You are blown away for a while, then there is a finale that is over the top, and then it's done, and it seems like it only went for about ten minutes. This was the briskest two hours I have felt in the theatres in a long time. Everything here is over the top and you really have to go with it. This is a perfect example of a film that, if you can't suspend your disbelief, then you will HATE this film. But if you allow yourself to watch this specticle, then you will have a complete and utter blast. The performances are standard for an action film, but I was suprised with how well James McAvoy was. He played the nerd turned ass puncher really well, and he's a great actor to boot. Jolie and Freeman were fine, and it was nice to see a little cameo by the great Terence Stamp. The mythology is fun to get into, but thats another example where you really just have to go with it. All of these positives said, there were a couple flaws that I noticed.

The biggest problem is the middle of the second act. It just really kind of dragged on, and sort of hindered my experience, and was not helped by a twist, that caused a large amount of innocent beople to die. That whole scene, and I even remember turning to my girlfriend and saying "they just killed a shitload of people", and it really bugged me. It seemed like it was there just to simply play into a plot twist. Just lazy screenwriting to me. Other than that, there aren't many problems. Common is not very good, some of the lines are horrible, and a few of the action sequences are repetative. However, this film is unapologetic about what it is, and you have to love that. If you can suspend your belief and just let yourself go along for the ride, than you will have a blast. It's a heavy metal rocker jamming out on a 500 pack of red bull. It's going to polarize people, so if you see it, leave a comment!

Random news...

Hey guys, here is your news for this Tuesday the 22nd...

-Looks like a Nazi comedy called Mein Kampf is in the works...here is what Yahoo has to say....

“Mein Kampf,” based on a dark farce by Hungarian playwright George Tabori, is set in a Vienna hostel before World War One. In the play, an insecure Hitler is befriended by an elderly Jew who gives him his infamous hair style and toothbrush mustache.

Tom Schilling (”Elementary Particles”) will star as Hitler, and Goetz Georg as his Jewish friend, Schlomo Herzl. Urs Odermatt will direct the production, which starts shooting in Vienna this week. UFA plans to release the film in Germany next year.

As bad as it sounds, it sounds like it could be a solid black comedy...

-Disney is in talks with the cast of Enchanted in hopes of making a sequel...
-Here is the official plot synopsis for Indiana Jones 4...

The whip-toting, punch-packing, snake-hating, globe-trotting archaeologist with a fedora is back on screen in “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,” debuting worldwide Thursday, May 22, 2008. This newest adventure begins in the desert Southwest in 1957 – the height of the Cold War. Indy and his sidekick Mac (Ray Winstone) have barely escaped a close scrape with nefarious Soviet agents on a remote airfield.

Now, Professor Jones has returned home to Marshall College – only to find things have gone from bad to worse. His close friend and dean of the college (Jim Broadbent) explains that Indy’s recent activities have made him the object of suspicion, and that the government has put pressure on the university to fire him. On his way out of town, Indiana meets rebellious young Mutt (Shia LaBeouf), who carries both a grudge and a proposition for the adventurous archaeologist: If he’ll help Mutt on a mission with deeply personal stakes, Indy could very well make one of the most spectacular archaeological finds in history – the Crystal Skull of Akator, a legendary object of fascination, superstition and fear.

But as Indy and Mutt set out for the most remote corners of Peru – a land of ancient tombs, forgotten explorers and a rumored city of gold – they quickly realize they are not alone in their search. The Soviet agents are also hot on the trail of the Crystal Skull. Chief among them is icy cold, devastatingly beautiful Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett), whose elite military unit is scouring the globe for the eerie Crystal Skull, which they believe can help the Soviets dominate the world … if they can unlock its secrets.

Indy and Mutt must find a way to evade the ruthless Soviets, follow an impenetrable trail of mystery, grapple with enemies and friends of questionable motives, and, above all, stop the powerful Crystal Skull from falling into the deadliest of hands.
