AD: FYC - A Serious Man...

Awesome new ad for A Serious Man. Haven't seen the film, but it's the Coens, so it needs to be in the Oscar hunt.

NEWS: Matt Damon and Josh Brolin In Talks For True Grit...

Talk about one remake that I am ACTUALLY interested in.

For a while now, the brilliant duo known to us normal mortals as The Coen Brothers, have talked about a remake of the Henry Hathaway-directed, John Wayne-starring 1969 Western, "True Grit." Actually, they have discussed the possibilityn of this film for about two years now, and only recently with the allegedly casting of Jeff Bridges as the lead, which was the role Wayne performed, has this project truly made any headway. However, that has changed drastically after this afternoon.

It appears that Matt Damon and Josh Brolin, the latter was the star of No Country For Old Men, the Coen's classic from two years ago, are now in talks to take up two of the other primary performances.

Oh, and it's going to get started rather quickly, as Paramount is going to fast track this thing, putting it into production in March, hoping for a later 2010 release (Oscar anyone?). Here is how The Playlist breaks down the story:

And it's happening sooner than you think. Paramount is putting the project into production next March for late 2010 release. The film is basically your average Western revenge tale about a young girl whose father is double crossed and killed by a helping-hand/outlaw. She hires a drunken U.S. Marshal (Wayne/now Bridges), later joined by a Texas Ranger, to seek revenge.

Damon is in talks to play the lawman/Texas Ranger (Glen Campbell in the original) who teams with the drunken U.S. Marshal (Bridges) and a 14-year old girl to track her father’s killer into hostile Indian territory. Brolin is in discussions to play the killer. The young girl has yet to be cast, just don't make it one of the Fanning sisters, please.

I've never seen the original, but after seeing and loving No Country For Old Men, I have total faith in the idea of Coen directed Western. While that film isn't directly a Western, there are many Western elements, and the story seems to be one that the duo could hit out of the park, as they do with pretty much every film they decide to make. Hell, these two could film a midget reading the phonebook in spanish, and I'd watch it. Actually, that would be one hell of a David Lynch film. Tell me you wouldn't watch that thing?

The interesting aspect of this news is that Damon is involved, and is set to have a MONSTER freaking '10. He's in "Liberace", Eastwoods "Hereafter", all hoping for a release in that big year. This guy is set to have a huge year, and is really setting himself up to be the next true Hollywood style movie star. And I must say, this is one guy I will definitely support in that role.

What do YOU think?

TRAILER: A Serious Man...

It's no secret that I have an awkwardly strong love for a certain directing duo, The Coen Brothers. However, there is nothing quantifiable that is similar to the love I have for this ballsy ass trailer, for the Brothers Coen and and their new film, A Serious Man. Seriously, scoring a trailer with the sound of a man's head bashing into a blackboard? I'm just going to let the trailer do the talking.

A Serious Man is the story of an ordinary man’s search for clarity in a universe where Jefferson Airplane is on the radio and “F-Troop” is on TV. It is 1967, and Larry Gopnik (Michael Stuhlbarg), a physics professor at a quiet Midwestern university, has just been informed by his wife Judith (Sari Lennick) that she is leaving him. She has fallen in love with one of his more pompous colleagues, Sy Ableman (Fred Melamed), who seems to her a more substantial person than the feckless Larry. While his wife and Sy Ableman blithely make new domestic arrangements, and his brother becomes more and more of a burden, an anonymous hostile letter-writer is trying to sabotage Larry’s chances for tenure at the university. Struggling for equilibrium, Larry seeks advice from three different rabbis. Can anyone help him cope with his afflictions and become a righteous person – a mensch – a serious man

NEWS: Coens Remaking True Grit...

There are some projects that are just doomed from the start. All Will Ferrel films, all parody films, films directed by Uwe Bol. However, there are some projects that are so perfect, that they make you believe in fate. This, faithful readers, is one of those. Variety is reporting that The Coen Brothers are set to remake the John Wayne vehicle, True Grit, based on the Charles Portis novel...

Portis’ novel is about a 14-year-old girl who, along with an aging U.S. marshal and another lawman, tracks her father’s killer in hostile Indian territory.

But while the original film was a showcase for Wayne, the Coens’ version will tell the tale from the girl’s p.o.v.

Pic will be their first period Oater.

Project reteams the brothers with Scott Rudin, their partner on the Oscar-winning “No Country for Old Men.” The Coens wrote the screenplay.

The film is in development for Paramount Pictures, probably Paramount Vantage, and this features one hell of a pitch. All you need to do to sell this film is say this; Coen Brothers directed period Western.

The Coen's just finished a new film, "A Serious Man", for Focus Features, and more news on that as it comes out...

Weekend Wrap Up...

Hey guys! You know the drill, so here is the estimated box office top 10...

1.Bangkok Dangerous
2.Tropic Thunder
3.The House Bunny
4.The Dark Knight
5.Traitor
6.Babylon A.D.
7.Death Race
8.Disaster Movie
9.Mamma Mia!
10.Pineapple Express

Bangkok Dangerous beats out Tropic Thunder...HOWEVER, it ONLY grossed 7.8 Million bucks. I don't know for sure, but that has to be the lowest recorded opening for a number 1 film this year. Why do you think it "bombed"?

Here are the notable DVD releases for this Tuesday, the 9th of September...only 3 of them...
- Baby Mama -
Comedy starring Tina Faye and Amy Poehler in which Faye's character hires Amy's to carry her child. Solid comedy from two of the worlds leading female comics. Both give great performances, but the show is really stolen by funnyman Steve Martin who plays Faye's geocentric boss. Good laughs, but heavy flawed. Worth a rental.

- Forbidden Kingdom -
Kung Fu movie starring Jackie Chan and Jet Li. What more do you need. Critics seem to like it, and the few people I have talked to who have seen it all enjoyed it. Worth a rental.

PICK OF THE WEEK
- The Fall -
Film directed by visionary director Tarsem Singh, or simply put, Tarsem, who is probably best known for the Jennifer Lopez vehicle, The Cell, or the R.E.M music video for Losing My Religion. The film stars Lee Pace as an injured stuntman who meets a young, impressionable child, and proceeds to tell her a story simply to get her to get him some morphine, to kill himself. Solid premise, and when anything is done by Tarsem, you know the visuals will be stunning. Worth a rental, or if you are like me, a blind buy.

Alright, so this looks to be a pretty stacked week for Box Office releases, at least in terms of demographics. The female population will be glued to there seats for The Women a remake of George Cukor's 1939 film, of the same name, or the Tyler Perry film, The Family That Preys, starring Kathy Bates. Both films deal with romance, affairs, and seem to be trying to appeal to the feminine population. Don't worry guys, we get the Pacino/DeNiro film, Righteous Kill, a story about two aging detectives on the hunt for a serial killer who takes out the "bad guys". Have DeNiro and Pacino as Detectives, throw in some guns and a Rolling Stones song, and you have yourselves a surefire hit. Now, whether it's good or not, that has yet to be seen, however, it does look promising, and with the cast they have (Donnie D anybody???), you can't go horribly wrong. Oh, wait, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson is in it...I take that back. All of that said, there is one film that looks to stand above them all...

PICK OF THE WEEK
Burn After Reading is the newest film from my personal favorite directors working today, the Coen Brothers. The film stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Tilda Swinton, J.K. Simmons, and John Malkovich, and to my surprise, has gotten some lukewarm to mild reviews. Now, the film has yet to be released to the public, so I don't know how it is, but the way that trailer is set up, it really has me hyped. I loved No Country For Old Men, easily the second best film I saw from last year, but their last comedy was the Tom Hanks film, The Ladykillers, so it's good to see them going back to comedy. Do I think it will be the best film of the year, no (The Wrestler or Benjamin Button gets that nod right now), but do I think it will be a great film, and an even better time...without a doubt.

This week looks to be really interesting, so expect a review of Righteous Kill and Burn After Reading sometime this weekend. I'll be seeing BAR on Friday, so I'll have that posted as soon as possible. Other than that, expect a top 10, some news and notes, and a DVD Review of The Fall.

Just a couple of pieces of news...some music to check out...

Hey guys! Here is some news that you all should be aware of...

-Ian McKellen WILL return as Gandolf in the upcoming Hobbit film...
-Jonah Hill is in talks to costar along side Shia LeBouf in Transformers 2...
-SAG has not struck a deal after roughly the first two weeks of talks...this, while early, does not look good...
-Look out for Mission Impossible 4 in the next couple of years...Tom Cruise's publicist has said that once the script is greenlight, it will be made...
-The next Coen Brother's film, Burn After Reading, will close the Venice Film Festival this year...

Other than that, there really is nothing new. Now, I really do love movies. It's my single most important passion. However, music comes in at second. So, I am slowly trying to do more posts that mix film and music, while still doing just straight film posts. I want to use this blog to highlight smaller films that I think everyone should know about, just like I want to highlight smaller bands or artists that I really like and think you should too. So, here's an example.

Kid Sister. This chica has popped due to the mad buzz behind this single featuring Kanye West. It was created by Kanye's friend and dj/producer A-Trak. It's a really sick song, and while I know some of you may have heard of her, most people that I have talked to haven't, and that is just a damn shame. So check this song out, and post a comment!

As always, GO SEE SOMETHING GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!

DVD Pick of The Week...

So, I was just hanging out, and then my girlfreind said that she was back from the mall. Now, she got me There Will Be Blood with some money I gave her, and she also got me the Coen Brother's gift set for my birthday, and it came today. So, in honor of that, I think I am going to start giving weekly, maybe on Wednesdays, a weekly DVD pick. Today's DVD pick is Blood Simple. This is probably the two's masterpiece (although Fargo may have something to say about that), and I recomend that everyone go out and rent, no BUY this film. It's one of the best modern film-noirs, if not the best, and it's in your best interest to go check this out now.

Go see There Will Be Blood too...it's bloody brilliant...
