REVIEW: Inglourious Basterds...

Quentin Tarantino is a god.

For those who read this blog a good amount, it should come to you as no surprise that I was looking forward to Tarantino's new film, Inglourious Basterds. The film has a brilliant cast, the script was beyond amazing, and oh, did I mention, it's QUENTIN TARANTINO. From Reservior Dogs to Death Proof, the man has made easily my favorite film of all time, in Pulp Fiction, and the quitessential revenge franchise, Kill Bill. Now it's his turn at WWII, in his much anticipated, 15 years in the making epic, Inglourious Basterds. Does it live up to that hype?

Basterds is a story that follows a young Jewish refugee Shosanna Dreyfus who witnesses the slaughter of her family by the devil himself, Colonel Hans Landa. Narrowly escaping with her life, she plots her revenge several years later when German war hero Fredrick Zoller quickly takes an interest in her and arranges an illustrious movie premiere at the theater she now runs. With the promise of every major Nazi officer in attendance, the event catches the attention of the "Basterds", a group of Jewish-American guerrilla soldiers led by the ruthless Lt. Aldo Raine. As the relentless executioners advance and the conspiring young girl's plans are set in motion, their paths will cross for a fateful evening that will shake the very annals of history.

Now, one would have you think, based soley on the marketing, that this was Quentins first true all out action film. Well, if you have read the script, or really know anything about the project, the fact that this isn't 100% true should not come as a surprise. However, the biggest part of this project that was mis-marketed was who the film follows. This is NOT a film that follows Brad Pitt, per se. It's a revenge film with Shoshanna as our lead.

That said, the first part of that long paragraph is not totally true. This film may be the single best action film this year. It just comes in a different way. Instead of physical punches and kicks, it's all about verbal beatdowns and stunningly intense often lengthy bits of dialouge.

Take the opening for example. It's about 15 minutes long, and it's all dialouge, but I have not been more on the edge of my seat during a scene this year. And I had a chance to actually read the script, so I knew what was going to happen. The film was able to take what I knew, and still leave my falling out of my seat. The dialouge throughout this film is not only a bit awkard, especially when given by Brad Pitt (particularly in a bit awkward scene near the end involving him and BJ Novak), but it's also some of the best of his career.

Some of the film does seem a bit rushed and as awkward as Brad Pitt giving dialouge as a cartoonish southern soldier, especially during his opening monoulouge which was fine on the page, but a bit weird when put on screen, but it also has some of the best visuals seen in his career. The project was but on a speeding fast track last year, all so Tarantino could get it out to Cannes, and it makes this a very interesting picture in his canon.

The film has it's closest relative in Kill Bill, and it mostly works. While that films dialouge was a tad better, instead of being a film sticking mostly to rotating shots of people discussing tipping and car films like in Dogs and Proof, it still has masterful scenes of dialouge, but it also has some of the most stunning visual flares of his career. For example, near the end of the film, there is a scene of brutal violence, that combined with the stunning use of music, may be the single best scene in any of his films. It's a stark version of what WWII would have been in the dreams of Tarantino. It's basic wish fullfillment in a cartoon with cartoonish versions of Hitler and JOeseph Goebells that not only was interesting to see on screen, but is a way to gauge what type of person you are watching this film with. My theatre had mixed reactions, ranging from awkward laughter (yours truly), to head in your hands, to a copy cat Eli Roth-esque smile.

The film follows Shoshanna, played by newcomer Melanie Laurent, who is not only beautiful, but gives a fantastic performance. With Jackie Brown, but more so Kill Bill, Tarantino has switched from being a very masculine writer, to putting that same sort of "guy talk" and masuclinity into his female characters. His last four films have followed strong female characters, and Laurent gives a performance that could easily join Uma Thurman as one of the better female roles in Tarantino's canon. She's the right type of sweet, especially with the interchanges between her and her lover, Marcel, with a right type of strength.

As her opposite is the only truly award worthy performance in the film, Christoph Waltz as Hans Landa. Everyone is riding this performance, so I will just say that it's easily the most perfect portrayl of evil seen on screen this entire year. He plays "the Jew Hunter", and take the evil of Anton Chigur from No Country For Old Men, and give him personality, and you would have something similar to Han. Not since Daniel Day-Lewis has evil been so personified on screen. THIS is the performance that people will be talking about come Oscar season. To be honest, this may be a stronger and more surprising performance than Heath Ledger as the Joker. Let the firestorm begin.

Brad Pitt is fine, a little weird but perfectly toned, and his cast of merry men have some of the best scenes of the entire year. Pitt is just a tad bit awkward, at least during his interchanges with Waltz. He does shine when the film needs a bit of laughter, particularly in the premiere scene, where it ends in such violence. He's a welcome addition to the film, but not the strongest part. The most polarizing of the roles may be Eli Roth, and where 99% of people hate the performance, I think he's perfect in the film.

The music is brilliant as well. Instead of relying heavily on source music, the score here is brilliant. It's a bit guitar heavy, but it's so strongly influenced by Spaghetti Westerns, that giving that sort of turn in a war film is really refreshing. The source music IS great here, and overall, this soundtrack is easily one of the best this year, maybe even more stellar than my personal favorite, 500 Days of Summer.

So really, all this review is attempting to say is that Tarantino had to be talking about himself at the end of this film when he has Brad Pitt look into the camera and say:

"I think this may be my masterpiece."

Because sir, this may very well be.

NEWS: Early Buzz for Inglourious Basterds, 3 New Clips...

So, it's officially here.

At the Cannes Film Festival, Quentin Tarantino's new film, Inglourious Basterds has finally premiered, to what now can be considered rawkus hype. Sure, there are a couple of negative reviews, one of which I will post at the end in video form, but it is nearly a consesus hit. Hell, it's even been hinted at being a favorite for the festival's main award, The Palm D'or, due to the festivals lack of stand out films. Here are just a couple of reviews for the film.

Total Film's Sam Ashurst: “Not only did I love every minute, if the French projectionist wanted to cue it up and roll it again from the start, I would have sat through the whole film again, with the biggest grin on my face. This is Quentin’s best film since Jackie Brown. It might even be his best film since Pulp Fiction.” “[Eli Roth is] the only weak link I could spot” … “Tarantino dialogue at its best” … “QT’s magpie eye has never been sharper, swooping down on Italian cinema and plucking the very best shots, framing and music to create a deserving homage to the spaghetti westerns of my youth.”

Empire's Chris Hewitt: “Rather brilliant. Every bit as idiosyncratic as the spelling of its title, it’s a wonderfully-acted movie that subverts expectation at every turn. And it may represent the most confident, audacious writing and directing of QT’s career.” … “The performances are superb across-the-board.” “[Christoph Waltz] may be a shoo-in for a Best Supporting Oscar nom” … “Some of his Grindhouse flourishes – large captions stamped on screen, the usual flirting with structure and chronology, offbeat musical cues (a David Bowie track shows up at one point) and the sudden introduction of a hip narrator (Samuel L. Jackson) – may irk some” … “certainly very talky,”

Now, here is one of two negative reviews that I have seen, and it comes to us from The Hollywood Reporter. While I haven't seen the film, I have read the screenplay, and I must say, WTF THR? I'm not sure if this guy had seen anything before hand, but while I totally have insane respect for this guy, I must say, his critiscm is very strong. It's a talky film, which should have been known from the outset since it's not a Tarantino film or anything, and while it IS historically inaccurate, I think that's a nulified point, as I don't think Tarantino was going for accuracy, nor has it been sold as a historically accurate film. Great critic, not the strongest points, in my humble opinion.

More reviews can be seen here (via /Film).

What I can tell you though is that three new clips from Basterds have been released, and all look great!

Clip 1: Bridget von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) informing Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) of two recent developments in the operation

Clip 2: Lt. Aldo Raine (Pitt) interrogating a German soldier about the locations of their camps and the artillery they have. He respectively declines the offer and decides to die for his country.

Clip 3: Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) telling Perrier (Denis Menochet) how Jews are like rats. From the films opening, which may be the most intense opening audiences may see this year. It's just a superb pieceo of writing, and this clip looks stunnning.

Wow, just really wow. I can't wait for this film. What about YOU?

PHOTOS: Inglourious Basterds, Up, and A New Toy Story Character?

Over the past 24 hours, new photos for a few of my most anticipated films have been released. Both Up and Inglourious Basterds photos have been released, and the Up ones may also have given us a glimpse at a new character for Pixar's much anticipated release, Toy Story 3.

First, here are the new Up photos, and they look GORGEOUS:

(5 more photos can be seen here)

Now, staying on Up, MTV has confirmed a rumor that has been floating around the web since the teaser trailer for the film was released.

Below is a photo of the newest member of the Toy Story crew, as shown as a special little easter egg (what's new, it IS Pixar after all) from the teaser for Up.

Awww, aint he so damn cute!

Here's the synopsis for what has been called the best film of the year, Up:

By tying thousands of balloon to his home, 78-year-old Carl Fredricksen sets out to fulfill his lifelong dream to see South America. Right after lifting off, however, he learns he isn't alone on his journey, since Russell, a wilderness explorer 70 years his junior, has inadvertently become a stowaway on the trip.

Pixar's Up is directed Pete Docter, one of the original Pixar members who directed Monsters, Inc previously and wrote the stories for Toy Story and Toy Story 2. The film is co-directed and written by Bob Peterson, who also wrote Finding Nemo. Disney will debut Up in theaters everywhere on May 29th this summer.

In other photo news, new pics from Quentin Tarantino's surefire hit, Inglourious Basterds have been released, and these shots look just as good as one should expect. Check out my favorite below, and click the link for more!

I've said my peace about how brilliant this film is set to be, having read the script and seen a few videos from it, but for those of you under rocks, here's the films synopsis:

During World War II, a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as "the Basterds" are chosen to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The Basterds soon cross paths with a French-Jewish teenage girl who runs a movie theater in Paris that is targeted by soldiers.

Inglourious Basterds is both written and directed by the infamous Quentin Tarantino, of everything from Reservoir Dogs to Pulp Fiction to Kill Bill to Death Proof previously. The Weinstein Company and Universal have partnered to bring us Tarantino's WWII masterpiece in all of its brilliant glory. Inglourious Basterds will officially hit theaters worldwide on August 21st later this year after its world premiere at Cannes.

NEWS: Inglourious Basterds Prequel?

One of my most anticipated films coming up this summer, happens to be Quentin Tarantino's new film, Inglourious Basterds. Not only is the cast amazing, spearheaded by Brad Pitt, but it's a Tarantino film, so of course I'm going to look forward to it.

From Resivior Dogs to Death Proof, Tarantino has yet to make a bad film, and his sophomore film, Pulp Fiction, is my favorite film of all time.

However, what had me worried when the film was originally announced was how it would work, and how much this film had changed since he first began to work on it, during the production of Pulp Fiction. That said, when I got my hands on the script, all of my worries were wiped away.

Not only is the films script stunningly well written, but there is ample backstory for each of the characters. Well, that backstory may be set to get it's full telling.

“I have a half-written prequel ready to go if this movie’s a smash,” Tarantino tells the New York Times.

Well, to me, this is great news. I loved all of the characters, particularly Eli Roth's, and there is more than enough story in the lives of each of these people that they could do 8 separate films.

However, Tarantino is famous for talking about projects and then bailing on them, so I will keep you all updated on this project as more news comes out.

POSTER: Eli Roth Is A Basterd...

A few days ago, the first character poster for Quentin Tarantino's new film, Inglourious Basterds was released, and featured Brad Pitt in what was a really bad ass poster. However, that one looks lame compared to this new one, featuring Eli Roth. It not only stars Roth, but his trusty baseball bat, which should, given some time, become really legendary. It not only kills people, but it's history is also equally kick ass. I just love this poster.

VIDEO: American Idol's Basterds Footage...

Yeah, I watched American Idol last night. However, it was for good reason. First, the contestants were doing songs from the movies. Hell, one of them even did personal favorite of mine, Falling Slowly, from the film, Once. Second, and most interesting, the mentor for the episode was a cinematic God of mine, Quentin Tarantino. Now, while the show sucked, they did show some interesting footage from Inglourious Basterds, and First Showing has the to-hot-for-tv version of that footage. Check it out HERE. I'll embed a copy when one is available, that actually fits here.

(UPDATE: I changed the blog layout, so here is the footage!)

REVIEW: The Inglorious Basterds Script...SPOILER FREE...

This one will be a tip toe walk through a mine field.

I've never written up a script review before, but when you get your hands on a Quentin Tarantino script, you do everything in your power to let that be known. ESPECIALLY when it is as amazing as this piece of writing is.

Inglorious Basterds is the long awaited World War II epic from the modern legend that is Quentin Tarantino. Over 15 years in the making, this was a film that originally looked to bring together an epic action cast, pretty much a carbon copy of what the current Expendables cast looks like. However, a major overhaul happened (no clue as to why), and now we have a cast featuring Brad Pitt and Eli Roth. A different feel? I may have to say yes.

All of that said, I'm here to enlighten you on what exactly the film is about, without giving anything away, and that is what I will do.

During World War II a group of Jewish-American soldiers known as "The Basterds" are chosen specifically to spread fear throughout the Third Reich by scalping and brutally killing Nazis. The Basterds soon cross paths with a French-Jewish teenage girl who runs a movie theater in Paris which is targeted by the soldiers.

That is where things get interesting. The first trailer has been released, and while it's toned exactly how the film will be, the real lead of this film is Melanie Laurent as the orphan girl, Shoshanna.

The film opens on a really well written scene of verbal cat and mouse, in which her family is given up by a farmer, who is holding them below his house to save them from being massacred by the Nazi party and it's soldiers. She is able to escape without being harmed, and from there, we jump to the next chapter (the film is set up in five chapters; Chapter One: Once Upon a Time … Nazi Occupied France, Chapter Two: Inglorious Basterds, Chapter Three: German Night in Paris, Chapter Four: Operation Kino, Chapter Five: Revenge of the Giant Face), where we finally meet a group of Jewish soilders, affectionally called, the Basterds. Led by Lt. Aldo Raine, a.k.a. Aldo the Apache, the group is on the trail trying to bring down the hated Third Reich.

Thats really as far as I can or will go with plot, so onto some critisicm.

Wow, this was a great read. Really well written, brilliantly stylized, and it is really just a great piece of writing from Tarantino. I think Latino Review put it best in their script review about a year ago.

If you took the bad guy swagger of RESERVOIR DOGS, the uber coolness and structure of PULP FICTION, throw in the revenge angle of KILL BILL, set it in World War II – you get INGLORIOUS BASTERDS.

Also, what's great about reading Tarantino scripts, the directors notes are within the writing, so one is able to sort of visualize the film in his or her head. There is one chapter, chapter 3 I believe, which is set to be shot in a "French New Wave Black and White," which I think will be the showstopper of the film. It comes in after the introduction to the Basterds, where some of the major plot mechanics set up shop.

Finally, the actors cast in the film seem to be perfect for the role, particularly that of Eli Roth. He plays the most interesting Basterd, Donny Donowitz, the Bear Jew. He takes a baseball bat (the one shown in the poster above) to soldier's skulls, and enjoys every bloody second of it. There is also a sort of neo-mythology behind his character, in that based in German legend, The Bear Jew is a Golem, an avenging Jew angel of sorts.

Everything about this piece worked. The villain, Hans Landa, was viscious and just fun to read, the leads were strong, and the story, in all of it's stylized glory, was phenominal. This may be one film that we won't be able to forget when it hits in August.

PHOTOS: Vanity Fair's Basterd of a Spread...

It looks like Vanity Fair outdoes themselves once again. TRAILER: Inglorious Basterds HQ...or more HQ...

Here's a few things I'm noticing...

1) It's so far, and this is about 5 seconds worth of footage, not really looking like a quintessential Tarantino film. There isn't much movement with the camera, and sure there are his patented foot shots as well as noir-esque dialogue quirks, but it's an interesting new feel for a Tarantino film, visually

2) Eli Roth is creepy as hell

3) Brad Pitt looks amazing

4) The cast kinda scares me, well, only in the case of Mike Meyers. He plays an overweight Jewish Rabbi, and Tarantino LOVES to take these kind of stars and reboot their careers, but I'm just a little nervous

5) This. Movie. Looks. Great. I'm a huge Tarantino fan, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt (Pulp Fiction is my favorite film of all-time), but I really like this trailer quite a bit.

Some news...

Hey guys! It's the weekend, so I hope you are all having a good time, and I have come to enlighten you all with your film related headlines for this Saturday, the 16th of August...

- Batman has been cleared! The alleged assault charges on actor Christian Bale have been dropped. Hopefully, since no one out of either camps have been saying anything, this can just be dropped.

- Matthew Vaughn, producer of the amazing films Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells and Snatch, and director of Layer Cake and Stardust, is looking to adapt the cult comic book, Kick Ass...sounds like something right up his alley...thoughts?? Thanks to Yahoo! for the info...

Written by Millar — whose “Wanted” series was adapted for the screen earlier this year — and drawn by John Romita Jr., “Kick-Ass” follows a high school dweeb who attempts to reinvent himself as a real-world costumed superhero named Kick-Ass who seems doomed to failure because he’s not athletic or coordinated until he runs into real bad guys with real weapons.

I'm all for this...what do you guys think???

- It looks like Mike Meyers is looking to get a small part in Quentin Tarantino's upcoming Inglorious Bastards...You all may roll your eyes right now, but I really think this could work, and this is something that his career needs. Thoughts?

- The upcoming Punisher film, Punisher: War Zone, may end up being PG-13...

- David Goyer is in talks to do the Invisible Man before X Men Origins: Magneto...NOT GOOD!

- Finally, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is set to be pushed back to summer of next year...

Alright, thats all I've got for now...come back later for some more news and notes!!

Lets put some rumors to rest...

So, as you all know, I normally talk about some big rumors, and a few times, they don't pan out. However, the following two rumors that I've talked about have been fufilled...

- Brad Pitt has OFFICIALLY JOINED INGLORIOUS BASTARDS!!! Thanks to The Movie Blog for the info....

Today we get word that Brad Pitt has signed on the dotted line and will star in Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastards and joining him in early casting are Eli Roth (director of Hostel) and B.J. Novak (”The Office”, Knocked Up).

Pitt will play a Tennessee hillbilly who assembles a team of eight Jewish-American soldiers. Eli Roth will play the role of Sgt. Donnie Donowitz, and Tarantino is locking in the other seven American actors who make up the Bastards team. Novak is expected to play PFC Utivich, described as a soldier of slight build who comes from New York.

That is huge news, and makes me just more excited for this film. QT's been writing this thing for about 20 years now, and the scripts been floating around and getting rave reviews, so expect this one to be huge. Shooting starts later this year, and it will open next years Cannes Film Festival...Oh, and Nastassja Kinski is in talks to join the film...yes, Kinski, the daughter of the brilliant Klaus Kinski...call me excited...

- The second rumor, and we saw this coming, was that Johnny Depp would be staring as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's new adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Well, it's 100% true. No information has been leaked about the possible shooting schedule, so more news on this as it develops...

In other news...
- Indy 5, yes, Indiana Jones 5, which is allegedly in the works, will NOT be based around Mutt Williams, at least if George Lucas has any control (and I must say, I wish he wouldn't...)
- The feature film adaptation of Flash Gordon is back in production...

That's all I have for now, so come back later for more news and a possible review of either Mummy 3 or X Files: I Want To Believe...

Some big news...

Here are your headlines for Wednesday, the 30th of July...

- A film based around Marvin The Martian is in the works...
- Patrick Swayze is in talks to star in the upcoming Dirty Dancing sequel...not a spin off like Havana Nights, a true sequel...
- Universal and The Weistein Co. are in negotiations on Quentin Tarantino's upcoming film, Inglorious Bastards, which would make it QT's first forray into the "studio system"...
- Disney's next film, the Princess and the Frog will be animated in 2-D!!!!
- An Alvin and The Chipmunks sequel has been confirmed...
- A spin off from this years comedy hit, Forgetting Sarah Marshall, is in the works, and it will be called Welcome to The Greek, and will be based around Russell Brand's rockstar character from FSM...
- Finally, we have the first true teaser trailer for Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, and I must say, I'm not excited for it. It looks kind of interesting, and dark, but I've never read the books, and I've only seen one of the films, so I won't be checking this out...

What do you guys think???
