Hello all! It's Christmas week, so we have a lot of stuff to get into, so here are your box office top 10...
1.Yes Man
2.Seven Pounds
3.The Tale of Despereaux
4.The Day the Earth Stood Still
5.Four Christmases
6.Twilight
7.Bolt
8.Slumdog Millionaire
9.Australia
10.Quantum Of Solace
Of those 10, the best film, or the one I think everyone should see is Slumdog. It's not a perfect film, but it is a really solid flick, with a lot of praise being heaped upon it. I don't think it's Oscar worthy, but 99.9% of this planet does, and it will win Best Picture come February, so check it out! Also, Will Smith's streak of films grossing over $100 Million will most likely end, as Seven Pounds only grossed $16 Million.
It's Christmas time, and for me, one of the best presents is a set of DVDs or a Best Buy Gift card, however, this week will have me asking for a different gift. Here are the DVDs you should Buy, Borrow, and Burn
BUY:
-Go back to last weeks post, there's nothing here-
BORROW:
-The Duchess-
I never got a chance to see this flick, but costume period dramas are a guilty pleasure of mine. It features Keira Knightley and her lovely cheek bones, and Ralph Fiennes, and will probably be talked about this Oscar season for art direction and costume design. Not really worth a purchase, but if you are like me and love films like Pride and Prejudice, then rent the hell out of this thing.
-Eagle Eye-
A film I did see, this convoluted film from director DJ Caruso, most famous for his Rear Window rip-off Disturbia and The Salton Sea, stars Shia Lebeouf as Jerry Shaw, a guy who is thrown into the middle of a cat and mouse game along with Rachel Holloman, played by Michelle Monaghan who become the nations most wanted fugitives, led by a mysterious woman who contacts them via cell phone. The film is definitely action packed, but it's also lazy and just not really all that interesting. Not a horrible film, just not a good one. Worth a rent, if you really want to see it.
BURN:
-Ghost Town-
Ricky Gervais in an American film...skip it at all costs...
Oh, also, Resident Evil: Regeneration comes out this week, so if you are a RE fan like I am, and enjoyed Final Fantasy: Advent Children, then give it a shot. I know I will.
I'm hopefully going to get out and rent Savage Grace, so you can most likely expect a review of this controversial flick...
As with most years, this Christmas week is jam packed with films that will be hitting your local theatres. First we have the major Awards flicks, starting with The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. This film, based on an F. Scott Fitzgerald short story, stars Brad Pitt as the main character, Ben Button, who is born in the body of an 80 year old, and as the years go by, he begins to age backwards. It also stars the elegant Cate Blanchett, and the much talked about turn from Taraji P. Henson, most known for playing Terrance Howard's main squeeze in Hustle and Flow. Ever since the trailer premiered with Indy 4 (the only thing worth the money I spent to see that flick), I have been anticipating this film like none other, at least from this year. However, early reviews have been mixed. I'm still extremely hopeful as David Fincher has yet to really let me down, minus Alien 4. So this Friday you can expect a review of this film. I hope you all check it out.
Then you have the other awards films, both based on plays, with Doubt and Frost/Nixon. Doubt features a great cast, with Amy Adams, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Meryl Streep, and Viola Davis, the latter two getting Golden Globe nominations for their respective roles. The film is about a heavy subject, as the plot is about a priest who has been accused of touching a male student. Not the most bright subject for Christmas time, but you can not go wrong with that cast. Speaking of great casts, Frost/Nixon doesn't have a bad one either. Telling the story of the historic interview between Richard Nixon and British TV host David Frost, this film stars Frank Langella and Charlie Sheen as Dick and David respectively, the same roles the two actors played in the stage version when it showed in London and New York. Langella is one of my favorite actors, at least after last years great film Starting Out In The Evening, and his performance is being buzzed about as a possible contender for Best Actor. Frost/Nixon is currently up for Best Film-Drama at this years Golden Globe Awards.
Then there are the family films, with Bedtime Stories and Marley And Me. Bedtime Stories stars Adam Sandler and tells the story of a guy who loves to tell stories to his niece and nephew, but as time goes on, his stories come alive. Pretty much a more sterilized and comedic Spiderwick Chronicles, but if you have a family, give it a shot. Also, if you have a girlfriend, then take her out to see Marley and Me. It's based on the book, and is a story about a family and their dog. I will not be seeing either, so moving on.
Finally, the last two films, the probable flops. First there is The Spirit, the Frank Miller directed adaptation of the beloved Will Eisner comic series. All I will say about this film, is that a guy over at a blog I really love reading, said that four words can sum up this film. "Not since Battlefield Earth". Enough said. It's being destroyed critically, but me being the massive fan of stylized film noir, I'll still end up seeing it. Finally, we have Valkyrie, the Tom Cruise, Nazi conspiracy film, about the conspiracy to assassinate Adolf Hitler. It's gaining mixed early reviews, but in a week that's really loaded at the top, there's just no way I think people will get out to this one. If any of you do see it, please let me know what you think!
That's all I've got for now, so come back later for more news, notes, and this Friday, I will have my complete ranking of all of the films I have seen in 2008, along with the 5 films I regret missing or never got the chance to.
Go see something good!

WEEKEND WRAP UP...
I hate making changes. Most of the time, when I make a change, at least for this blog, they end up working. However, in my attempt to ease my work load, I've neglected to update you all on upcoming DVD's and theatrical releases. However, the weekend wrap up is back, so here is the box office Top 10...
1.The Day The Earth Stood Still
2.Four Christmases
3.Twilight
4.Bolt
5.Australia
6.Quantum Of Solace
7.Nothing Like the Holidays
8.Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
9.Milk
10.Transporter 3
11.Slumdog Millionaire
I'm throwing in the 11th film, because, this weekend, I will get the chance to check it out, and I would like you all to read up about it. I'll explain more about this film in a few minutes.
So, over the past couple of weeks, we've had a few big releases, whether it be The Dark Knight or even smaller films, like Bottle Rocket in a new Criterion Edition, however, that completely changes this week...Here are the DVD's you should Buy, Borrow, or Burn...
BUY
-Burn After Reading-
This is the little seen follow up to No Country For Old Men, from the brilliant brother duo, Joel and Ethan Coen, and features a Golden Globe nominated performance by Frances McDormand. It's a very funny, if dry comedy, with a stellar cast, including a hilarious turn by Brad Pitt. It's not the funniest film of the year, but it is one of the more fun, and a must own for any fan of the Coen's, like yours truly.
BORROW
-TRAITOR-
Written by funny man, Steve Martin, this was another little seen film, that was a neo-replica of The Bourne series, just featuring Don Cheadle. Cheadle plays Samir Horn, a former U.S. Special Agent who turns to terrorism after a stay in a Middle Eastern prison. Guy Pearce co-stars in this solid action thriller. Worth a rent for sure.
BURN
-Death Race-
The critically destroyed remake of Death Race 2000, a personal favorite of mine, featuring Jason Statham and Tyrese. Avoid like the plague.
-House Bunny-
No matter how hot I think Anna Farris is, there is no way that this flick is getting money.
-Mamma Mia!-
A film based on a musical based on Abba music. Enough said.
-Mummy: Tomb of The Dragon Emperor-
A third film in the Mummy series, and it DOESN'T feature Rachel Weisz? Oh, and a fourth one is in the works, FYI
-Hamlet 2-
This is a big winner from this past Sundance Film Festival, but outside of a couple of good reviews, this is one that was mildly panned all around. Also, if you say the words "Napoleon Dynamite" in the TV spots, you can rest ushered your film will end up on this part of my list.
-American Teen-
I would say it would be worth a rent had The Breakfast Club never been made. I know I will get flamed all around, but you know what, if you are in high school, getting ready to leave school, check it out. Plus, one of the main characters is a film maker, so go for it, I'll just be picking up my copy of Sukiyaki Western Django.
Finally, we have a few films getting wide release this weekend. First we have Seven Pounds, a new film starring Will Smith as an IRS agent with a fateful secret who embarks on a journey of redemption by forever changing the lives of seven strangers. It features Rosario Dawson, and has not been talked about much in the huge awards discussion over the past month. Not one I'm to interested in, but over the past couple of days, the trailers have gotten me a little more into it. I don't think Smith is the most brilliant of actors, but he does have talent and an insane amount of range, and it features the same director as Pursuit of Happyness, a director Smith chose after seeing some of his Italian films, Gabriele Muccino.
However, when you have to go up against Slumdog Millionaire, not many films can win. This is the brand new film from director Danny Boyle, who stole the show for me last year with his great film, Sunshine. Its the story of how impoverished Indian teen Jamal Malik became a contestant on the Hindi version of "Who Wants to be A Millionaire?" A decision made without prize money in mind, rather, an effort to prove his love for his friend Latika, who is a huge fan of the show. Sounds like a great story, and in many, many circles, it's the odds on favorite to win the Golden Globe for Best Drama Film, and maybe even the Oscar for Best Picture.
So, I will have a review of Slumdog up over the weekend, along with a possible review of Curious Case of Benjamin Button, if a certain Grand Rapids Press selects me for one of 25 pairs of tickets.
Come back later for more news and notes...

WEEKEND WRAP UP...

Hey guys! This has been a pretty busy week, which is good, because the upcoming week is going to move a little slow. Here is the box office top 10...
1.Quantum Of Solace
2.Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
3.Role Models
4.High School Musical 3: Senior Year
5.Changeling
6.Zack and Miri Make a Porno
7.Soul Men
8.The Secret Life of Bees
9.Saw V
10.The Haunting of Molly Hartley
It looks like QoS will indeed be the largest grossing Bond film to date, with a gross of $70.4 Million for the weekend, surpassing the then number one, Die Another Day. Madagascar 2 has hit over the $100 Million mark with a weekend gross of $38 Million, and Role Models gained a modest $11.7 Million...
This is actually a really huge week for DVD releases, so here are the notable ones you should, or shouldn't pick up, in a new style of sorting that I will be trying, Buy, Borrow, Or Burn...Oh, and starting on Tuesday, I will be making this a separate post, with more in depth thoughts on the films, and the types of versions, and prices at the four major shopping centers; Circuit City, Best Buy, Target, FYE...
-Buy-
~WALL-E~
This is the newest film from Pixar, and it's probably their best film. It features one of the most enduring characters in film, and is one of the best love stories you will get a chance to see this year. It's gorgeous, and for a child's film to have such neo-Kubrickian view of the future and still be so sweet a just full of heart is truly amazing. I can't say enough about this film, and it is currently my 7th favorite film so far this year.
~TROPIC THUNDER~
Funniest film of this year. I'm not going to say anything more than that, as you all really need to get out and see it. I mean, come on, Robert Downey Jr. in black face?!?! BRILLIANT...
-Borrow-
~ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD~
This is the newest film from German director Werner Herzog who is probably the best, or at least the most interesting documentary filmmaker working today. It's a film in which Herzog traveled to Antarctica to capture it's natural beauty that normally isn't put to film. This is worth a rent for any fan of nature, or for anyone who has a Blu-Ray player and an HD TV...
~GONZO: THE LIFE AND WORK OF HUNTER S. THOMPSON~
The newest documentary about the life and work of the father of Gonzo Journalism himself, Hunter S. Thompson. Narrated by Johnny Depp, this is one film that will definitely be in my queue come this Tuesday.
-Burn-
~SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS 2~
Really?
So, this week sees a lot of worthy DVD releases, but two films are released theatrically, that I could not care less about. First is Twilight, the new film based on the massive tween hit novel. Vampire falls in love with a mortal, wow, truly innovative storyline (could a person say something with more sarcasm). Then we have Bolt, the newest animated film from the lesser studio over in happy world, Disney, and starring John Travolta and Miley Cyrus. I'm steering clear of this one like the plague.
Instead of giving you guys a review about two films that I really don't care about, and spending my own money on the said films, I will hopefully be bringing you a review of either Gonzo, or Encounters, and my thoughts on the controversial film from Bill Maher, Religulous. Wow, that could get interesting...
Go see something good!

WEEKEND WRAP UP...
Hey guys! This is another interesting if lackluster weekend, so here's the box office top 10...
1.Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa
2.Role Models
3.High School Musical 3: Senior Year
4.Changeling
5.Zack and Miri Make a Porno
6.Soul Men
7.Saw V
8.The Haunting of Molly Hartley
9.The Secret Life of Bees
10.Eagle Eye
Eagle Eye is STILL in the top 10? Madagascar 2 grossed roughly $64 Million this weekend, and DESTROYED Role Models which only brought in about $20 Million...What did you guys see this weekend?
So, just like last week, this upcoming Tuesday's DVD releases are pretty sparse. However, there are a few worth noting...
- Star Wars: The Clone Wars -
New all animated Star Wars film that received pretty damning reviews. I never saw it, and after Episode 3: Revenge of The Sith, my love for this franchise is pretty much dead. Rent, no BUY, the original trilogy instead...
- Bottle Rocket -
The premier film from Royal Tenenbaums director Wes Anderson is now coming out in a new Criterion 2 Disc Edition in both DVD and Blu-Ray. It's a fantastic film, and to me, it is Mr. Birdman's best film to date. Featuring two great performances from previously unknown actors Luke and Owen (who also co-wrote the film with Anderson) Wilson. It's a hefty purchase at $35, but it's a brilliant version and far superior to the single disc that I own...
--PICK OF THE WEEK--
Hellboy 2: Curse of the Golden Army
While I believe the first film is superior, the reason this is my pick of the week and a mandatory buy for fans, is the insane creativity, if a little self indulgent, that is in the creature and world design. Del Toro knows mood and is possibly the most creative director working today when it comes to creatures. Also, the 2-Disc Collector's Edition features a 3 Hour documentary on the making of the film, and Guillermo Del Toro always does insanely interesting commentaries. Worth a rental at least...
Also, last week I didn't do all the research necessary, and neglected to let you all know that two newly released John Cassavetes films were released, and they are Woman Under the Influence, and the one I'm most interested in checking out, The Killing of A Chinese Bookie. I'm not fluent in Mr. Cassavette, so these two are definitely on my list to check out, and if you have Netflix, they should be on your list as well.
Well, this week has one release theatrically, and that is Quantum of Solace, the newest film in the James Bond franchise based on the famous Ian Flemming novels. Now, this one picks up right where the GREAT Casino Royale left off, and features Daniel Craig returning as the suave super-spy himself. The presales for tickets have been solid (although Twilight is killing it), and yours truly has the opportunity to check it out on Thursday night, so you can expect a review of this come late Thursday night. The title may be a little weird (but if you take a look at what Flemming meant by it, it's actually quite brilliant), but the huge pile of scenes that have been released and are currently available on this very blog, I'm really excited.
Are you guys going to get out and see Quantum of Solace or are you going to check something else out? What have you guys seen lately?
Go see something good!

WEEKEND WRAP UP...
Hey guys! This may be the shortest weekend wrap up ever, but you'll see it's for good reason...here are you box office top 10...
1.High School Musical 3: Senior Year
2.Zack and Miri Make a Porno
3.Saw V
4.Changeling
5.The Haunting of Molly Hartley
6.Beverly Hills Chihuahua
7.The Secret Life of Bees
8.Max Payne
9.Eagle Eye
10.Pride and Glory
HSM3 grossed another 15 million bucks, even though it had, and all films had for that matter, an extremely rough Friday. Zack and Miri grossed 10 million, which is pretty standard, although below standards for the star Seth Rogen, for Kevin Smith comedies. Please though, check it out. It's a very solid film, and so is Changeling. If there was one film to go see however, please, I beg of you all, get out and see W. It's really solid...
Okay, now this is where it gets interesting. There is not ONE single DVD worth noting this week! If you are a Steve Carell fan then I would say go check out Get Smart, but instead, how about you all save your money, and go out and vote. No matter who it's for, but your voice can not be heard unless you use it in the proper way, and that is going to the polls, and voting for who you think should run this country. It's not a political issue, it's a social issue, and instead of only having 50.3% of this nation get out, lets all go out and do what we can to make this country better. For most of the people reading this, it's your first time, yours truly included, and there is no better time for a first time than during the most important election in this great countries history. Please, vote.
So, we all thought that the DVD selection was short, well, so is the theatrical releases. First is the animated film, Madagascar 2: Escape to Africa, the sequel to the mediocre/bad film, Madagascar. It has been getting better early reviews, so if you are young or have a young one, check it out. Second is Role Models, a film starring Paul Rudd. It looks awful, so I'm moving on. Finally, there is Rachel Getting Married, the new film from Silence of The Lambs director, Johnathan Demme, and stars Anne Hathaway. She portrays a girl who, over the past 10 years, has been in and out of rehab, and is now coming home for her sister's wedding. Hathaway is getting some Oscar talk, so this is the one I would say check out. If I see anything this weekend, this will be the one, so expect a review of this on Saturday.
That's all for now, so come back later for more movie news! What should my next top 10 be?
Go see something good!

WEEKEND WRAP UP...
Hey guys! Here is your weekend box office top 10...
1.High School Musical 3: Senior Year
2.Saw V
3.Max Payne
4.Beverly Hills Chihuahua
5.Pride and Glory
6.The Secret Life of Bees
7.W.
8.Eagle Eye
9.Body of Lies
10.Quarantine
High School Musical 3 will gross right around 46 million bucks this weekend, and Saw V comes in very respectable with 30.5 million big ones. The Chihuahuas will fall to number 4 with about 7 million dollars, and I officially think the Mayan Doomsday Prophecy of 2012 is on schedule. Get out and see W and Body of Lies!!
So, this is not a really noteworthy week for DVDs. Actually, the only two worth a discussion are Journey to the Center of The Earth and Kit Kittridge, so I'm going to stop the DVD discussion there, and get to a full week of theatrical releases.
Oh man, this is one big week for film releases, at least to me personally. First off we have the new film from Clint Eastwood Changeling. It stars Angelina Jolie whose prayers for her kidnapped son to return home are answered, however, it doesn't take long for her to suspect the boy who comes back is not her actual son. It co stars John Malkovich and is one that has been gaining a lot of Oscar buzz, especially for the direction of Clint Eastwood. The second film comes to us from Kevin Smith, and features Seth Rogen and the beautiful Elizabeth Banks. It's called Zach And Miri Make A Porno, and the title tells the story. Zach and Miri are two roommates who are short on rent and decide to shoot a porno, yet they find out that they may have deeper feelings for each other than previously thought. It looks like it will be hilarious and Kevin Smith films are always cause for excitement. Finally, we have the new film from Guy Ritchie, RockNRolla. Early reviews for this film have been mixed, but his style of crime/gangster films always seem to be a fun time. With classics like Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrells and the underrated Snatch, this is one of my more anticipated films of this season. It stars Gerard Butler, who I'm slowly starting to like watching, and the gorgeous Thandie Newton. So, this week should have something for everyone, and you can expect a review of Zach and Miri and RockNRolla for sure, and if I have a slow weekend I will post my thoughts on Changeling as well.
That's all I've got for now, so come back later for more movie news and a new top 10, the top 10 Scariest Films Of All Time...

WEEKEND WRAP UP...
Hey guys! Here is the box office top 10...
1. Beverly Hills Chihuahua
2. Quarantine
3. Body Of Lies
4. Eagle Eye
5. Nick and Norahs Infinite Playlist
6. The Express
7. Nights in Rodanthe
8. Appaloosa
9. The Dutchess
10. City of Ember
So, Beverly Hills Chihuahua grossed another 17 million bucks, with Body of Lies grossly underperforming. Here's my question to you all. Why?
So, this week is a pretty interesting week for DVD's. Here are the noteable releases...
- Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of The Crystal Skull...
What can I really say that hasn't already been said. Sure, it's like a bad episode of the X-Files, but there is also something inherently fun with it. I've got the perfect idea. Go to your local store, and buy the first three Indiana Jones films, or at least Raiders. It is one of the best film series ever, and Raiders of the Lost Ark may be one of the greatest adventure films in history. That said, rent, don't buy, Indy 4...
- 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days
A beautiful if emotionally devistating film about a young woman helping a freind get an illegal abortion. I don't want to give anything away about this film, because it truly is one of the most emotionally exhausting yet amazing films that I've seen all year. Please, do yourself a favor, and see this film...
- Mongol
Small film, part of a trilogy, about the life of Genghis Kahn. I don't really know anything about this film, other than people I really respect loved it, so check it out...
~~DVD PICK OF THE WEEK~~
- Standard Operating Procedures
The brand new documentary from amazing filmmaker, Errol Morris, about the heinous acts that took place at the Abu Ghraib Prison. I haven't seen this film, so that's really all I know about it, but it's beloved by many of my favorite critics, and is from one of the greatest documentarians today. Check it out!
So, this week is a pretty lame week for theatrical releases. First is the videogame adaptation, Max Payne, starring Mark Whalberg as the troubled hero of the same name. I loved the video game, and the early trailers have me really excited to check this one out. Then we have the new teen sex comedy, Sex Drive. I saw this one about a month ago, and found it to be pretty sub par. It's funny, but not enough in a summer loaded with solid comedies. Finally, and most interestingly, we have the new George W. Bush biopic, W, from director Oliver Stone. Early reviews have been solid, but there have also been a good amount of script reviews that have been taking this film to task. That all said, I like Stone, at least a few of his films, and the subject matter is so interesting, that this, if you take my opinion for anything more than that, is the one that you all should be checking out. Expect a review of this and/or Max Payne, and go back a few notes to check out my reveiw of Sex Drive.
That's all I've got for now. Come back later for more news, notes, and a top 10...

WEEKEND WRAP UP...
Hey guys! I have a few things to get into, so here is the Box Office Top 10...
1.Beverly Hills Chihuahua
2.Eagle Eye
3.Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist
4.Nights in Rodanthe
5.Appaloosa
6.Lakeview Terrace
7.Burn After Reading
8.Fireproof
9.An American Carol
10.Religulous
Wow...Chihuahuas for the win...Beverly Hills Chihuahua grossed roughly 29 Million dollars...really people? If any of you have seen it, let me know how it was...I have lost pretty much all hope for humanity...I say most, because we will have to wait untill November 4th for me to lose all faith...
So, this upcoming Tuesday doesn't look to busy for DVD's, but there are a few to highlight...
- The Happening
Possibly the worst film of the year so far, saved only for the fact that Zooey Dechanel is gorgeous, and M. Night Shamhammer has a blatant style, and I give the guy a little credit. Just avoid this one like the plauge...unless you drink, and then maybe it could be some fun if you have some friends over...
- You Don't Mess With The Zohan
Again, avoid at all costs.
- The Visitor
A solid little indie drama starring Richard Jenkins, who we have recently seen in Step Brothers and Burn After Reading. This made my last top 10 of the year, and is one that you should definitley check out.
-DVD PICK OF THE WEEK-
PARANOID PARK
This Tuesday, you have one movie you must see, and that is the newest film from Gus Van Sandt, Paranoid Park. It's haunting, poetic, beautiful, and most of all, brilliant. Aside from the Dark Knight, this may be the best film I've seen all year, and come this Tuesday, it may just be my favorite. This is right up any Van Sandt fan's wheelhouse, and if you like movies that strive to be art instead of a way for people to show off their Chihuahuas, then this movie is for you. I don't even consider it a movie. It's a piece of art.
If you are looking for something to check out this weekend, then you have a few choices. First is the sports formula movie, The Express, about the first African American winner of the Heisman Trophy. If you don't like sports or movies about sports, then you have the family film, City of Ember, starring Bill Murray as the king of an underground city, or the new Kiera Knightley, critic loved, period piece, The Dutchess. Finally, you also can choose between the new "home movie" style horror film, Quarantine, or the star studded Ridley Scott political thriller, Body Of Lies, starring Russel Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio. Oscar season has started...
Come back later this week for more news, notes, top 10, and hopefully a review of either The Dutchess or Body of Lies, along with a review of The Visitor, and Paranoid Park (a repost).

Weekend Wrap Up...
Hey guys, I've got a lot to share with you all, so here is the box office top 10...
1.Lakeview Terrace
2.Burn After Reading
3.My Best Friend's Girl
4.Igor
5.Righteous Kill
6.Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys
7.The Women
8.Ghost Town
9.The Dark Knight
10.The House Bunny
Lakeview Terrace grossed roughly 15.6 million bucks...not a great opening, but it is solid for a film that's basically going on buzz because of Samuel L. Jackson. Burn After Reading is still going strong and has recieved very mixed reviews. If you've seen the film, please, post your thoughts in the comments below...
So, this week doesn't have the greatest selection for DVD's, but there are a few...
- Deception -
Sex Thriller starring Ewan McGregor, Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams. The trailers made it look interesting, but a little paint by numbers, but I think it may be worth a rent. I have not heard a single thing about it, so give it a shot...
- The Foot Fist Way -
Danny McBride stars...three words that should make you get your ass in line right now. He plays a karate instructor, and this has been getting great buzz. With his roles in Hot Rod and this years hits Pineapple Express(which he was the best part in), and a smaller role in Tropic Thunder, this guy is looking like he will be a big time player in the comedy world.
- Leatherheads -
A solid little sports film with great, noir like, dialouge that is given great performances by Renee Zellwegger and George Clooney. Clooney also directs this film, and while it's not the funniest film of the year, it's one of the more underrated, and worth a rent. I gave it a 7, so take that for what it is...
- Run Fatboy Run -
A comedy that really doesn't make you laugh...skip it...
- Sex and The City -
Skip it, BUT this is coming from a guy who wasn't the biggest fan of the show, so if you are a fan of the show, give it a shot.
PICK OF THE WEEK
- Pathology -
I've not heard one single critical thing about this film, but it only saw a limited release, and stars Milo Ventimiglia as a doctor who just finished school, and graduated top of his class. I don't know much about this, so here is the official synopsis...
When med school student Ted Gray (Milo Ventimiglia) graduates top of his class he joins one of the nation’s most prestigious Pathology programs. With talent and determination Ted is quickly noticed by the program’s privileged and elite band of pathology interns who invite him into their crowd. Intrigued by his new friends he begins to uncover secrets he never expected and finds that he has unknowingly become a pawn in their dangerous and secret after-hours game at the morgue of who can commit the perfect undetectable murder. As Ted becomes seduced into their wild extracurricular activities the danger becomes real and he must stay one step ahead of the game before he is the next victim.
Now, I'm not a real big fan of horror or films that have to do with doctors, but there is one thing that I am a fan of. Crank. The film is written by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, two really funny and smart guys who also happened to be the people behind the suprise hit that was Crank, and the upcoming sequel. So, anything they have something to do with, will be getting a thumbs up from me. Expect a review of this on Tuesday...
ALSO, this week sees the release of one of the most anticipated things, at least for me, of the year. TV ON THE RADIO's NEW ALBUM, DEAR SCIENCE!!! I don't know how many of you know about this little band, but they are my favorite band out today, and they are the single reason I still have hope for modern music. They aren't for everyone, but check out this video for their song, "Wolf Like Me".
Okay, so I will be out of the U.S. this weekend, so I probably will not be seeing any movies. However, there are a couple of films that I will be seeing the second I get back. First, and probably the biggest release is Eagle Eye. It stars Shia LeBouf and is the latest film from DJ Caruso, director of Disturbia, and the horribly underrated, Salton Sea. It looks like a solid thriller, and the premise, at least to me, is extremely interesting. Then there is Miracle at St. Anna, the newest film from Spike Lee, about a group of African American Soldiers who come upon a statue head with magical powers, which has been getting lukewarm buzz. Still, Lee is a great director, and this film is one I'm really interested in checking out. Finally, there are the two book adaptations, Choke and Nights in Rodanthe. Nights is a Nicholas Sparks adaptation, so you can expect a lot of mundane and basic romantic moments encompassed by a paint by numbers story, and Choke is the new Chuck Palahniuk adaptation that looks a little iffy. I really like Palahniuk, but the way it is shown in the trailers seems like it will be a lot of drek. Granted, that's what people said about Fight Club, however, Clark Gregg, the director, is no David Fincher, so I have only a little anticipation for this. I will probably see Choke and Eagle Eye over the weekend, so sometime next week, you can expect a review of those.
What are you checking out this weekend??

Weekend Wrap Up...
Hey guys! You know how this works, so here is the Box Office top 10...
1.Burn After Reading
2.Tyler Perry's The Family That Preys
3.Righteous Kill
4.The House Bunny
5.Tropic Thunder
6.The Dark Knight
7.Bangkok Dangerous
8.Traitor
9.Death Race
10.Babylon A.D.
Burn After Reading opened with about 19 million bucks, as it should! Please, if you haven't gone out, go and check out BAR. Righteous Kill was critically destroyed but still made about 16.5 million bucks...
Here are the noteable DVD releases for this Tuesday, the 16th of September...
- 88 Minutes
Thriller starring Al Pacino and directed by Jon Avnet, the same guy behind this past weeks release, Righteous Kill. Skip it...
- The Love Guru
Austin Powers 4: Arabian Nights is a better title...skip this drek...
- Made of Honor
Patrick Dempsey romantic comedy...another skipable film...
- Speed Racer
20 bucks worth of cinematic acid. If you want to sit down and want to feel like to have a skittles enduced seizure, rent this flick. It's a cotton candy colored blast, with cool visuals, and campy performances. Rent worthy
- Young @ Heart
This is a film I have been pretty interested in for a while, and so should you. It's a film about a group of elderly people, Young @ Heart, who go around the country and rock out. They cover pop and rock hits, from The White Stripes to The Ramones. It's a documentary, and it looks like it's a sweet little film about an interesting group of people with a heart warming story. Rent this one right away.
~ PICK OF THE WEEK ~
- Snow Angels
This film stars Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell, and is directed by Pineapple Express helmer David Gordon Green. It brings together the lives of a teenager, his babysitter, her estranged husband, and their daughter. I haven't heard any buzz behind it, but it's from David Gordon Green, one of the best directors we've got today, so I'm definitley interested. Expect a review of this one on Tuesday.
So this is a busy week for new releases, but most look like drek. First, there are the comedies. Ghost Town stars Ricky Gervais as a man who is kind of a jerk, who suddenly suffers from a heart attack, and is pronounced dead for about 7 minutes. This event has caused him to be able to see people who have died, and would like to say or do one more thing before they rest for eternity. I'm not the biggest Gervais fan, and this doesn't look like it will change that. The other comedy we have is My Best Friends Girl, and it stars Dane Cook who...moving on....
Then there is the duo of films for the family/tween set. Igor is an animated film about an evil scientists assistant who enters a science fair. It stars John Cusak, and looks to be a decent little flick. I like the visual style, and the story is interesting, so if you are looking for something to take some syblings to, have it be this one. Otherwise, there is the highschool documentary that has been getting insane buzz, American Teen. It's been out for a while, but is finally hitting Michigan, so if you like docs and you happen to be in highschool, this may fit your taste. Outside of those two, we have the thrillers, Lakeview Terrace starring Samuel L. Jackson, and Tell No One, a French film that has been getting insane buzz around the internet and in film circles. This is the route I'm going, so you can expect a review of either of these films, probably Tell No One, on Friday or Saturday.
That's all I've got for now, so come back later for some news, notes, and a top 10...

Weekend Wrap Up...

Hey guys! You know the drill, so here is the estimated box office top 10...
1.Bangkok Dangerous
2.Tropic Thunder
3.The House Bunny
4.The Dark Knight
5.Traitor
6.Babylon A.D.
7.Death Race
8.Disaster Movie
9.Mamma Mia!
10.Pineapple Express
Bangkok Dangerous beats out Tropic Thunder...HOWEVER, it ONLY grossed 7.8 Million bucks. I don't know for sure, but that has to be the lowest recorded opening for a number 1 film this year. Why do you think it "bombed"?
Here are the notable DVD releases for this Tuesday, the 9th of September...only 3 of them...
- Baby Mama -
Comedy starring Tina Faye and Amy Poehler in which Faye's character hires Amy's to carry her child. Solid comedy from two of the worlds leading female comics. Both give great performances, but the show is really stolen by funnyman Steve Martin who plays Faye's geocentric boss. Good laughs, but heavy flawed. Worth a rental.
- Forbidden Kingdom -
Kung Fu movie starring Jackie Chan and Jet Li. What more do you need. Critics seem to like it, and the few people I have talked to who have seen it all enjoyed it. Worth a rental.
PICK OF THE WEEK
- The Fall -
Film directed by visionary director Tarsem Singh, or simply put, Tarsem, who is probably best known for the Jennifer Lopez vehicle, The Cell, or the R.E.M music video for Losing My Religion. The film stars Lee Pace as an injured stuntman who meets a young, impressionable child, and proceeds to tell her a story simply to get her to get him some morphine, to kill himself. Solid premise, and when anything is done by Tarsem, you know the visuals will be stunning. Worth a rental, or if you are like me, a blind buy.
Alright, so this looks to be a pretty stacked week for Box Office releases, at least in terms of demographics. The female population will be glued to there seats for The Women a remake of George Cukor's 1939 film, of the same name, or the Tyler Perry film, The Family That Preys, starring Kathy Bates. Both films deal with romance, affairs, and seem to be trying to appeal to the feminine population. Don't worry guys, we get the Pacino/DeNiro film, Righteous Kill, a story about two aging detectives on the hunt for a serial killer who takes out the "bad guys". Have DeNiro and Pacino as Detectives, throw in some guns and a Rolling Stones song, and you have yourselves a surefire hit. Now, whether it's good or not, that has yet to be seen, however, it does look promising, and with the cast they have (Donnie D anybody???), you can't go horribly wrong. Oh, wait, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson is in it...I take that back. All of that said, there is one film that looks to stand above them all...
PICK OF THE WEEK
Burn After Reading is the newest film from my personal favorite directors working today, the Coen Brothers. The film stars George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Tilda Swinton, J.K. Simmons, and John Malkovich, and to my surprise, has gotten some lukewarm to mild reviews. Now, the film has yet to be released to the public, so I don't know how it is, but the way that trailer is set up, it really has me hyped. I loved No Country For Old Men, easily the second best film I saw from last year, but their last comedy was the Tom Hanks film, The Ladykillers, so it's good to see them going back to comedy. Do I think it will be the best film of the year, no (The Wrestler or Benjamin Button gets that nod right now), but do I think it will be a great film, and an even better time...without a doubt.
This week looks to be really interesting, so expect a review of Righteous Kill and Burn After Reading sometime this weekend. I'll be seeing BAR on Friday, so I'll have that posted as soon as possible. Other than that, expect a top 10, some news and notes, and a DVD Review of The Fall.
Go see something good!

Weekend Wrap Up...
Hey guys! Sorry for not posting for the past couple of days...no news to speak of, outside of McCain's VP choice and Hurrican Gustav, but I don't want to get into weather or politics here, so lets just get into it...here's the box office top 10...
1.Tropic Thunder
2.Babylon A.D.
3.The Dark Knight
4.The House Bunny
5.Traitor
6.Death Race
7.Disaster Movie
8. Mamma Mia!
9.Pineapple Express
10.Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Tropic Thunder is still number 1...only grossed 16 million bucks though...This brings me to my question. Why have the past three weeks box office numbers been so low? Have you guys gone out to the theatres in say, the past month, or has your selection detered you from shelling out your hard earned dinero?
Traitor is at a solid 5...I'll have a review of that either tomorrow or later tonight...
Go see Vicky Cristina Barcelona...it's amazing...
Here are your noteable DVD releases for this Tuesday, the 2nd of September...it's a trio of small indie flicks...
- The Promotion...Indie comedy starring Sean William Scott and John C. Reily about two guys attempting to get a promotion at their grocery store...Little seen film, that had an interesting trailer, solid cast, and a pretty cool premise...give it a rental.
- Then She Found Me...Helen Hunt and a Colin Firth star...there's the reason to skip it...
~PICK OF THE WEEK~
- Reprise...
Two freinds who have a competative spirit deal with life, love, and work...all I know about this film is that it's a big critic favorite, and the people I've talked to have loved it. I'll be renting this one.
Alright, here's the deal. Summer is coming to a big time close, and the theatres are definitley taking a hit, quality wise. This week sees ONE new release, Bangkok Dangerous, starring Nick Cage as an assassain who goes good after meeting a lovely lady in Bangkok...so, instead of telling you guys to go see that probable pile of shit, I am going to give you the five best films, still in first run theatres...
5. Traitor
4. Tropic Thunder
3. Wall E
2. Vicky Cristina Barcelona
1. The Dark Knight
So, if you feel an urge to get out to the theatres, and you haven't seen one of these, please, do yourself a favor, and give one a shot, especially Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Traitor. More on Traitor later...
That's all I've got for now, so come back this week for some news, notes, a DVD review, and a review of Traitor and probably Bangkok Dangerous...

Hey guys! Here is your box office top 10...
1.Tropic Thunder
2.The House Bunny
3.Death Race
4.The Dark Knight
5.Star Wars: The Clone Wars
6.Pineapple Express
7.Mirrors
8.The Longshots
9.Mamma Mia!
10.The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
This may be the weakest, or at least most spread out of all the weekends this summer... The top 4 all grossed between 10 and 17 million, with Tropic Thunder coming in at about 16.1 million...TDK falls to 4th, and it looks as though it won't get near Titanic...People need to realize something. Titanic will never be touched box office wise...it was a weak summer that Titanic was in, and grossing about 1.8 BILLION dollars, won't happen again, especially with some studios looking to release films in theatres, and in digital realms at the same time, such as iTunes...
Here are your note able DVD releases for this Tuesday....
- Chicago 10
Documentary on 8 protesters who were put up for trial after the events of the 1968 Democratic National Convention. That's all that I really know about this film. Celebrities voice characters in recreations, it mixes animation with archival footage, and it was a big hit two years ago at the Sundance Film Festival...This is a really interesting story that I can't wait to see on film...go give it a shot if you are like me and love '60's history...
- Postal
Uwe Boll's latest film...critics actually didn't hate it...still not gonna get this money however...
- Redbelt
Latest film from David Mamet, and stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as a red belt Jiu Jistu master who launched into prize fighting after a fateful night...worth a shot, if only to see what Ejiofor does...
~PICK OF THE WEEK~
- Son of Rambow
Story about two friends, in '80's Britain, who attempt to make a sequel to First Blood. That one line should get you excited to see this film. It's from director Garth Jennings who became famous for the adaptation of the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, and this looks like a perfect addition to this film creators cannon. Check it out!
So, it's the end of the summer, with only one big name release coming up, Eagle Eye, but in the meantime, we have some films from big names in the art houses, but none this week, sorry to say. Guess you'll have to wait a couple of weeks for Blindness and Burn After Reading. This weekend however, we have a really mediocre lineup. First are the two action flicks...Traitor, starring Don Cheadle, which is pretty much just the Bourne series with a black Jason Bourne...and Babylon A.D., which actually doesn't look horrible, yet stars Vin Deisel so it will be. HOWEVER, it is a film from Gothika and La Haine helmer, Mathieu Kassovitz, so I'm still interested. Then we have the lame duck comedies, Disaster Movie and College, which don't even deserve my time discussing them. And then the drama Henry Poole Is Here starring Luke Wilson and featuring a great song from The Bravery in the trailer. There's also Hamlet 2, but I am not sure about the release pattern in the local area for that one, but if it's around your area, check it out...
This weekend will probably see me at Babylon A.D and/Traitor, and maybe Hamlet 2. Also, I will try to get The Life Before Her Eyes and Son of Rambow for a possible DVD review. You can always expect some news and notes, so continue to read my notes, and check out my blog for some added videos like Oscar nominated short film, Even Pigeons Go To Heaven...

Weekend Wrap Up...
Sorry for the late post, I had an opportunity to get out and check out Mirrors, so I did just that, and will have a few thoughts, maybe a review, tomorrow with my news posts...but here is the box office top 10 for this weekend...
1.Tropic Thunder
2.The Dark Knight
3.Star Wars: The Clone Wars
4.Mirrors
5.Pineapple Express
6.The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
7.Mamma Mia!
8.The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2
9.Step Brothers
10.Vicky Cristina Barcelona
Tropic Thunder trounced TDK with a gross, for the weekend, of 26 million, compared to TDK's 16 million bones. It's good to see the years first real solid, wide released comedy get some bank. While In Bruges may be better, TT is a damn good film, with one of my favorite performances of the year from Robert Downey Jr. Also, Mirrors comes in a respectible fourt, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona is a suprise at number 10.
Here are your noteable DVD releases for this Tuesday...
- The triage of suckage...A) Street Kings B) Hannah Montana Shit Turd 3D C) WORST OF ALL...PROM NIGHT
- Miss Pettigrew Lives for A Day...Looks like it could be a cute little film, and the cast looks pretty good, so give it a shot...
PICK OF THE WEEK
- The Life Before Her Eyes
Second film from amazing director Vadim Perelman, whose first film, The House of Sand and Fog is still making me weep, and it stars Uma Thurman who plays a woman who survived a school shooting, and whose guilt is destroying her seemingly perfect life, 20 years later. Please, this is a great director, and it's a great stoyline, so go give this a shot. I know I will.
Finally, we have the theatrical releases...First are the three surefire p.o.s's, The House Bunny, starring Anna Farris as a Playboy Bunny who tries to change some lives...then there is The Rocker, staring Rain Wilson as an aging rocker...and Death Race, the illfaded, blasphemous remake of a favorite, classic film of mine, Death Race 2000. Please, if you want to see DR, check out DR2000 first. It's a great film, its campy, and most importantly, it's just a great time, with some political statements too.
That pile of shit aside, we also have the middle of the road sports formula film, The Longshots, starring Ice Cube, and the AMAZINGLY HILLARIOUS looking Hamlet 2, which is the film you will be reading a review of here come this weekend. Steve Coogan plays a drama teacher looking to make a sequel to Hamlet, starring Hamlet, and Jesus. Sounds awesome, the trailer's amazing, and the cast is too. You need to check it out.
So, sometime this week, you can expect my thoughts on Mirrors, maybe a review of Vicky Cristina Barcelona and Hamlet 2, along with some recomendations, a top 10, and some news and notes.
Go see something good!

Brief Weekend Wrap Up...
Hey guys, this post is going to be shorter than normal, and you will find out why in a minute...but first, here is the box office top 10...
1.The Dark Knight
2.The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
3.Step Brothers
4.Mamma Mia!
5.Journey to the Center of the Earth
6.Swing Vote
7.Hancock
8.WALL-E
9.The X-Files: I Want to Believe
10.Space Chimps
SPACE CHIMPS!?!?!? SPACE CHIMPS!?!?!?! TDK grossed ANOTHER 44 million bucks to lead this week...Pineapple Express....GOOD LUCK!
Alright, this is why I am going to have this shorter than normal...there is NO DVD worth mentioning...Even the geniuses over at Criterion aren't releasing anything this week!!! That all said, on either Monday or Tuesday, I'll have a top 10 so you all can check out some of those, and I will also recommend some others...
Now, this week is not only a mediocre one for DVD sales, but it also sees the release of some less than hotly anticipated films, well, save for one...first there is Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2...and moving on...the second and final film is Pineapple Express, which for those of you who may not have a TV with you at the rock you've been living under, is about two stoners who witness a murder, and their story of running from the said murderers. Now, the fact that it's a Judd Apatow production gives me pause, but then knowing that David Gordon Green, yes, the George Washington/Snow Angels/Undertow/All The Real Girls, David Gordon Green will be helming this stoner epic gives me relief. Go see this flick! I know I will...
So I said I would have a Mummy 3 review this weekend, but I steered clear of that mess, so you can fully expect a PE review this Friday...also, I feel kind of bad about not having anything up this week, so in the upcoming weeks, with the mass of new releases (Vicky Cristina Barcelona anyone???), and the fact I'll be back at school, you can expect a ton of reviews of films in wide release...In the mean time...
I still want to hear about your choices for character's and the actors/resses playing the character for the inevitable third Batman film...
Go see Brideshead Revisited this Friday...I hear it's a good flick...
Go see something good!!
1.The Dark Knight
2.The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
3.Step Brothers
4.Mamma Mia!
5.Journey to the Center of the Earth

Weekend Wrap Up...
Hey guys! Here is your weekend wrap up. First, the box office top 10...
1.The Dark Knight
2.Step Brothers
3.Mamma Mia!
4.The X-Files: I Want to Believe
5.Journey to the Center of the Earth
6.Hancock
7.WALL-E
8.Hellboy II: The Golden Army
9.Space Chimps
10.Wanted
TDK grossed another 75 MILLION DOLLARS, bringing it's total, domestic gross, to 315 MILLION BUCKS....IN 2 WEEKS...that's another record for the boys over in Gotham City...
Alright, so what about DVDs to go and rent this week...well, here are your note able releases you can expect at your local video rental store, or in your Netflix queue...
- Doomsday...This is an interesting thing. This is a post apocalyptic film from the director of The Decent, a fantastic horror film, and it is like Mad Max, just with updated visuals. I know nothing about this flick, so I may have to take a look at it.
- Harold and Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay...I've never seen the first film, and I will probably never see this one. Do give it a shot of DVD though, as the DVD is made to be a sort of "choose your own adventure" style of flick. I hate stoner comedies, so I won't be checking it out.
- Never Back Down...Think Step Up mixed with a bad UFC fight, and add a pinch of Laguna Beach, and you have Never Back Down. It's entertaining, but in a campy kind of way. It's poorly written, poorly acted, poorly shot, and nothing in it really works. Don't see this film...
~~ PICK OF THE WEEK ~~
- Shine A Light
Rolling Stones + Martin Scorsese = Shine A Light. That's all you should have to hear to get excited about this flick...
And for those of you who want to get out this weekend, you have three choices that are going wide this weekend. First we have the horribly titled, Midnight Meat Train, starring Vinnie Jones, coming to us from the mind of Clive Barker. If a tall, former soccer player bashing faces in on a train isn't really your style, then there is the family friendly, improbable, Swing Vote. This stars Kevin Costner and tells the story of one man, who's vote will decide who the president of the US is. Finally, the one I will be at, is The Mummy: Tomb of The Dragon Emperor. It's the third film in The Mummy series, and brings back Brendan Fraiser in the lead role, and he takes on China's "Dragon Emperor" and his undead army. It looks fun, and Jet Li is in it, so you can expect a few fight scenes. So, those are your main three choices this week.
That's all I have for now! This week you can expect a DVD review, some news and notes, and a few recommendations for films to rent this weekend. Also, I'll be seeing Mummy 3, so expect some stuff from that. So come back for more!
Go see something good...
1.The Dark Knight
2.Step Brothers

Weekend Wrap Up...
Hey guys!! Here is this weekends top 10 box office rank....
1.The Dark Knight
2.Mamma Mia!
3.Hancock
4.Journey to the Center of the Earth
5.Hellboy II: The Golden Army
6.WALL-E
7.Space Chimps
8.Wanted
9.Get Smart
10.Kung Fu Panda
TDK made 155.34 MILLION dollars this weekend, which means it now has the highest grossing opening weekend of any film, ever. Mamma Mia made 27 million bucks...did any of you see that??
So, this week is a really lame week for DVD's...actually, there is only one new release that is worth noting, 21. 21, the gambling film starring Jim Sturgess, from Across The Universe, is alright, and probably worth a rent for his performance. It has it's moments, but it really is a mediocre film. It's shot really generically, and the characters, while funny at times, are really type characters...probably a 6 or 7/10. Go rent High and Low, a film noir from brilliant director Akira Kurosawa...
Just like DVD's, this is a small week for Theatrical Releases, however, the two that are going wide are pretty big films themselves...We have Step Brothers and X Files:I Want to Believe. I know where I'll be, but I want to hear from you guys...where will you be this weekend...
A) Watching Step Brothers
B) Watching X Files
C) Checking out both
D) Checking out The Dark Knight
That's all I have right now...come back later for more news and notes!

Weekend Wrap-Up
Hey guys! I'm back, and I've got some stuff to do, so, I'm gonna keep this a little short. Here are your top 10 box office winners for this week...
1.Hellboy II: The Golden Army
2.Hancock
3.Journey to the Center of the Earth
4.WALL-E
5.Wanted
6.Get Smart
7.Meet Dave
8.Kung Fu Panda
9.Kit Kittredge: An American Girl
10.Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Indy 4 is still in the top 10...Hellboy II made roughly 38 million bucks...I'll be seeing that later this week, so expect a review of that film, sometime later this week...
Here are the note able DVD releases for this Tuesday...
- College Road Trip -
Martin. Lawrence. Comedy. All three of those words are enough to keep any smart people away from this film...
- Step Up 2: The Streets -
I don't get these films, so I say that they are avoidable, at all costs
- Penelope -
Christina Ricci and James McAvoy in a film about a pig nosed girl who needs and is longing for love. Maybe worth a rent, solely because the cast is intriguing...
- Shutter -
ANOTHER horrible American remake of an Asian horror film...skip it at all costs...
~~ PICK OF THE WEEK ~~
The Bank Job
A solid heist film, starring Jason Statham, and based on a "real story". Solid performances, great cinematography, a good soundtrack, and an intriguing story make for a good entry into the heist film genre, especially in a year that hasn't seen many solid ones. Worth a rental at least.

Oh, Trafic comes out this week. For those of you who don't know about Jaques Tati, please, rent Playtime or Mon Oncle, and then you will know why I am really excited to put this one right at the top of my queue
Alright, so this week sees the release of three films in wide release to theatres across this country. First, Space Chimps, an animated film about monkey astronauts. Second, Mama Mia, a story about a girl...wait, what am I saying. Unless you are either 6 years or younger, or have an over the top obsession with ABBA, and I know, don't we all, then you will be seeing The Dark Knight. I'm not going to say anything, as, if you haven't heard about this film, than you need to ask your landlord to upgrade the rock you've been under. I will be reviewing this this weekend, but it will be a little shorter, as I really want to get into a discussion with those of you who see it this weekend. So, if and when you check it out, leave a comment and lets get into this hotly anticipated film.
So, I just have two more things to say. First, here is what the CEO from Warner Brother's had to say about a certain Wild film from director Spike Jonze.
"We've given him more money and, even more importantly, more time for him to work on the film," Horn said. "We'd like to find a common ground that represents Spike's vision but still offers a film that really delivers for a broad-based audience. We obviously still have a challenge on our hands. But I wouldn't call it a problem, simply a challenge. No one wants to turn this into a bland, sanitized studio movie. This is a very special piece of material and we're just trying to get it right."
What are your thoughts? Is it alright for studios to hold back films if they don't fit their ideas, or should the directors have a little more say in the final cut of the film they spend months working on?
Finally, here are three films that I saw this weekend on HBO, and my brief thoughts and rating for them...
- The Marine -
Over the top, So bad it's funny, campy, are all words that can describe this horribly comedic film starring professional wrestler, John Cena. Worth a rent if you need a laugh. Have a double feature. The Marine, and the Black Dahlia...
3/10
- Ocean's 13 -
Solid heist film, and the second best in the series. Totally worth a rental. Even better on second and in my case third viewings. Casey Affleck is worth it alone.
8/10
- The Simpson's Movie -
Funny film, but watch it during the week on Fox. Worth a rental for show fans, otherwise, skip able...
