NEWS/POSTER: French Avatar Poster, And The Soundtrack Listing Spoils The Film...

I love film scores/soundtracks. I love them long time.

However, many times a films plot can be spoiled, almost completely, by simply revealing the titles of the tracks. Many times, a composer will list a song with some sort of thematic title, that instead of revealing plot points, simply posits the films theme/style. Take The Dark Knight’s Joker Theme, “Why So Serious?” for example. Instead of being called “The Joker Takes Control of Two Boats For A Social Experiment”, it simple plays off the films theme and style. That said, James Horner, composer of the score for Avatar, didn’t decide to do that, and instead decided to ruin much of the films plot.

But first, some unspoilery news.

First, a new poster has been released, and looks beyond gorgeous. Sure, it’s a split head poster, something that I have never really been a fan of, but honestly, there has yet to be something released about this film that has hindered my anticipation for this thing. Sure, it has been curbed a bit, particularly when seeing the human aspects of the film (which are beyond lackluster), but I’m still really excited to see what Cameron can do with this pet project of his.

Also, in a ReelzChannel interview, Horner confirmed that the film would clock in right at three hours.

POSTER/BUZZ: Crazy Heart...

Originally built with the help of the CMT network, Crazy Heart is a film that has burst out of nowhere (set for a spring 2010 release originally), and has gathered MASSIVE buzz for both the film as a whole, as well as the films male lead. Well, add a poster to that buzz.



What the hell is Crazy Heart you all may be asking? Here's the films synopsis:

Bad Blake is a broken-down, hard-living country music singer who’s had way too many marriages, far too many years on the road and one too many drinks way too many times. And yet, Bad can’t help but reach for salvation with the help of Jean, a journalist who discovers the real man behind the musician. Bad also becomes the mentor to a contemporary country star, Tommy Sweet (Colin Farrell), while simultaneously struggling in the rising young crooner’s shadow.

The film stars Jeff Bridges, who is getting Mickey Rourke size buzz for his performance as the lead, Bad Blake. Bridges isn't only a strong performer in the film, according to those who have seen it, but he also sings in the film, a bonus that the Academy truly loves. It's not a super strong year for male leads, so so far this year, it looks like Bridges and Colin Firth, for A Single Man, look like the Rourke/Penn double team for this year.

Along with buzz from critics, Bridges is going to get not only nominated, but be put right in the forefront, because the man has been pumping out performance after performance for 40 years now. Seriously, this a performance the Academy jerks itself off to in their golden coked out daze.

Just saying, watch out for this film come Oscar time.

POSTER: Kick-Ass...

Now THIS is what I want to see from my Kick-Ass promotional material!

As anyone who follows me on Twitter or has read this blog would know, I am both insaney excited for the upcoming Matthew Vaughn adaptation of the hit comic book, Kick-Ass. However, with the trailer that premiered last night, I can't help but wonder how marketable, in a PG sense of the word, this film is. Sure, the red band stuff is bound to be great, but for those interested based on what the green band trailer is, are going to be in for an interesting throat kick when they get into the theatre. That said, the new poster which premiered on Myspace, is amazing. Enjoy!



As any good superhero would, he chooses a new name — Kick-Ass — assembles a suit and mask to wear, and gets to work fighting crime. There’s only one problem standing in his way: Kick-Ass has absolutely no superpowers. His life is forever changed as he inspires a subculture of copy cats, is hunted by assorted violent and unpleasant characters, and meets up with a pair of crazed vigilantes, including an 11-year-old sword-wielding dynamo, Hit Girl (Chloë Moretz) and her father, Big Daddy (Nicolas Cage).

Kick-Ass hits theaters on April 16th 2010.

POSTER/TRAILER: Cracks...

Wow, wow, wow, wow, wow...

Eva Green first bust onto the scene in the brilliant Casino Royale, and I think we all owe a great debt to Martin Campbell for not only creating what has become one of the best Bond films to date, but also introducing us to this stunning beauty, at least in a commercial sense. Sure, first thing I ever saw her in was The Dreamers, but Royale only cemented the fact that this is not only a beauty to be on the lookout for, but a great actress as well.

Now onto her new film, Cracks. It's a film that I hadn't even heard of yesterday, and now it's one that I can't wait to see. The film is directed by Jordan Scott, who is indeed the daughter of Ridley Scott, and it's a drama that takes a look at the lives and relationships among girls at a British boarding school, where Green's character teaches. This sort of all girl story is something we don't really see in the theatres very often, so who knows. This could be a film that come it's release, could be one worth seeing. At least in the meantime, this poster is one that is definitely worth seeing.



Also, the trailer is also online. It looks intense, and exactly the type of film that is hinted at every so poeticaly in the poster. It's a period film, and the film looks absolutely stunning visually, and you know, Green isn't to bad on the eyes either. The slow-motion is used great here, and the film stars Imogen Poots, from 28 Weeks Later, so expect a fantastic group of actresses to dig their teeth into this heavy material. Enjoy!

POSTER: David D’Andrea’s Antichrist Poster From Fantastic Fest...

One of the biggest suprise and shocking films I have had a chance to see this year was Lars Von Trier's Antichrist. Now, this polarizing film has become either a respect or hate (I would say love and hate, but it's really hard to "love" this film), and I fall directly on the respect side. Here is my review of the film, which is chock full of dark themes, and one hell of a stylish look. Throughout the span of marketing the film, there were hundreds of thousands of trailers and posters, however, none may be as amazing as this poster, from David D'Andrea, who created this piece for Fantastic Fest, which can be seen below. POSTER: Antichrist...

This is easily one of the coolest posters I have seen in a LONG time.

This is the newest one sheet for the upcoming controversy sparker from Lars Von Trier, called Antichrist. Knowing what these rusty scissors are a hint at makes this poster all the more creepy. This is NOT the U.S. version however. This is simply a proposed Australian version, and has yet to be approved for release. Don't expect this one to see the light of day though, due to how, and this is coined from the Playlist, "ballsy" this poster is.

Here's the films synopsis:

A couple lose their young son when he falls out the window while they have sex in the other room. The mother's grief consigns her to hospital, but her therapist husband brings her home intent on treating her depression himself. To confront her fears they go to stay at their remote cabin in the woods, "Eden", where something untold happened the previous summer. Told in four chapters with a prologue and epilogue, the film details acts of lustful cruelty as the man and woman unfold the darker side of nature outside and within.

POSTER: Peter and Vandy...

FINALLY, this film is getting some marketing.

After seeing this film at the Waterfront Film Festival I couldn't help but fall in love with it. It's a fantastic romance, in the vein of 500 Days of Summer, but less stylized. Take the disjointed narrative style of Pulp Fiction, and throw in the realism of Days, and you get something looking a bit like Peter and Vandy. Ritter and Weixler play the titular Peter and Vandy, a young couple in Manhattan. It’s a full service love story, however, not just a standard series of adorable misadventures, ending with a kiss and the hope that the ending is really just the beginning for our young lovers. PETER AND VANDY is told out of sequence – jumping back and forth between the everyday occurrences of a relationship, from fights to meeting for the first time to just staying in for the night, the bouncing between time periods help illuminate the totality of Peter and Vandy’s relationship.

TRAILER/POSTER: The House of The Devil...

So anytime there is a badass retro style poster, I love to give it a little shout out over here at I Are Movies. However, mos tof the time, the film itself doesn't really live up to the poster (Hell Ride I'm looking at you). So when the film is as AMAZING, if not more so than the poster, I love to feature it hear, so everyone gets a bit of time to lookout for it.

That is the case with The House of The Devil. Released by indie darling Magnet/Magnolia, this film looks truly great, and a perfect addition to that companies recent releases, like Timecrimes, Let The Right One In and the upcoming Bronson. Here's the synopsis:

“In the 1980s, college student Samantha Hughes takes a strange babysitting job that coincides with a full lunar eclipse. She slowly realizes her clients harbor a terrifying secret; they plan to use her in a satanic ritual. ”

I LOVE this trailer. It looks very moody and sure it starts a bit slow, but that finish looks so intense, that this is one that I can't wait to get my hands on when it hits XBOX Live on October 1st, before being unleashed the day before Halloween in theaters.

POSTER: Saw 6...

Is it weird that I am somewhat excited about this installment of the Saw franchise? I'll get into why in a moment. First, check out this AMAZING new poster for the sixth film in the highest grossing horror franchise of all time.



Now, why would such a sequel/gorno hater like yours truly be interested in the sixth installment of this horrible (minus the first two films) franchise? Well, for a few reasons. First, the buzz coming out of Comic-Con, where a scene or two were shown, was above positive. Not much bad buzz came out of the Con for this film, and at such a geek explosion that is the Con, that's always good./

Second, and arguably most interesting, is this is the first film from director Kevin Greutert, who happened to be the editor of each of the past five Saw films. If there is ONE thing that makes the Saw series respectable, it is just that, the editing. It's always done in an interesting and well done manner, so having the editor take over the helm as the director is somewhat compelling.

Also, the first trailer, while HORRIBLE, seems to show some sort of merry-go-round style trap, that could call for some rather interesting set pieces. All in all, I don't think this film will be good, AT ALL, actually quite the contrary. I honestly think that this film will probably be the worst of the franchise. But if I'm going to be honest, I must say, I'm kind of interested. For a horror film, this series has it's place, and I can't get angry, as after the first weekend, they pretty much fall of the planet. I hate the franchise as a whole and as a collective, but for what they are, they have a market, and I can't get mad at that. I WILL however get mad at torture porn, but that's another story, one I have written on many, many times.

POSTER: Up In The Air...

So it comes as no surprise to anyone who reads this blog that I don't care to much for Jason Reitman at this point in time, and it's all due to one name. Juno.

For reasons I don't feel like getting into (it's an overwritten schlock fest that is every mainstream person's meal to feed their appetite to feel "hip" and "indie" in a similar way to that of Little Miss Sunshine. Yeah, I'm looking at you, 20 something who calls me homeskillet. Go to hell.), I just find not only the script of that movie to be awful, but the direction behind it to be very standard and basic when taking it in the realm of independent dramas. It's just not a good movie, at least not until the characters actually go through some sort of drama, so about 2/3rds of the way in, or near the start of the third act.

That said, he HAS made a truly brilliant piece of comedic cinema, in the form of Thank You For Smoking. It's a film that I truly treasure as one of the better modern comedies, and features a star making performance from Aaron Eckhart. It's both well made and written, and leaves me even more dumbfounded as to how Reitman could then turn in something less than stellar, in Juno.

However, Up In The Air, which premieres at this years Toronto International Film Festival (which I am no longer attending), a film based on Walter Kim’s novel of the same name. Here's a plot description:

Up in the Air stars George Clooney as Ryan Bingham, a corporate downsizing expert whose cherished life on the road is threatened just as he is on the cusp of reaching ten million frequent flyer miles and just after he’s met the frequent-traveler woman of his dreams. The movie also stars Vera Farmiga, Anna Kendrick, Jason Bateman, Danny McBride and others.

Well, thanks to /Film, we have a chance to see the first theatrical trailer for this hotly anticipated film. It's not my biggest film of the rest of the year, but it IS getting huge Oscar buzz, due to Reitman's involvement AND the new 10 rule for Best Picture Nominees, so who knows what will happen when this film hits theatres in Decemeber.

I personally think Reitman can be a top notch director, when his screenplays are well written, so I'm not worried in that realm. Also, the cast is great, as not only do I love Clooney and Farmiga, but Anna Kendrick is easily one of my favorite young actresses, and is herself getting a lot of Oscar buzz for a possible Best Supporting Actress nod. So there's no reason to worry there, but still, Juno has left a bad taste in my mouth, so before I get excited, I need to actually see something, and this poster doesn't really do anything for me. What about YOU?

POSTER: Kickass Ninja Assassin Poster...

Early this week I posted the first trailer for Ninja Assassin, and while it's a badass trailer, nothing compares to this poster. Really, just check out the kickassery that this movie has brought into the world.



A young ninja turns his back on the orphanage that raised him, leading to a confrontation with the clan.

Ninja Assassin is directed by Australian filmmaker James McTeigue, who previously worked as the first assistant director for all three Matrix movies and Speed Racer and also directed V for Vendetta himself. The screenplay was co-written by newcomer Matthew Sand and comic book veteran J. Michael Straczynski, of the "Babylon 5" TV show and the script for Clint Eastwood's Changeling previously as well as the Silver Surfer movie. Warner Brothers is finally bringing Ninja Assassin to theaters on November 25th this year.

POSTER: Stunning New 9 Poster...

So there are few films that I get really excited for in a given year. This year you have 500 Days of Summer, Public Enemies, Where The Wild Things Are, and Moon, just to name a few. Well, a film that is looking to make its way into that list, if it's not already there, is the animated film, 9.

With a superb cast (icluding my girl Jennifer Connelly), great pedigree (produced by Tim Burton, blah, and Timur Bekmambatov, awesome), and some really awesome trailers, this film is looking to be one of the better animated films of this year. It comes to us from Shane Acker, whose short film of the same name, which was Oscar nominated, brings us this tale of 9 dolls who attempt to save humanity. Well, to add to that list of awesome promotional material, you can add this amazing new poster. It's the first official poster from Focus Features, the company behind the film, and the design is stunning. It's gorgeous, and the style of the poster (and the film itself), along with the newly announced PG-13 rating really has me excited. Check it out below!



9 takes place in a world parallel to our own, in which our very humanity is threatened. A group of rag dolls living a post-apocalyptic existence find one of their own, 9, who may be the key to their survival.

9 is both written and directed by visionary filmmaker Shane Acker, of two previous animated shorts The Hangnail and The Astounding Talents of Mr. Grenade. The screenplay was co-written by Acker and Pamela Pettler (Corpse Bride, Monster House). 9 was first an animated short that debuted in 2005 and received an Oscar nomination. Focus Features will be debuting 9 in theaters everywhere starting on September 9th.

POSTER: Winged Creatures...

So today, FirstShowing happened to get a look at one of the coolest posters I've seen all year. It comes to us from the indie realms, and is for a film called Winged Creatures. It's the newest film from Australian director Rowan Woods, and while the film is going under the name Fragments here in the states, this is not a US poster. The poster may be a little straightforward and simple, but it's so aesthetically pleasing, that it's one that I had to post about. While the film has gotten mid to low level buzz coming out of the festival circuit when it hit late last year, I'm still interested if only for this badass poster, and the phenomenal cast. Check out the poster below!



Winged Creatures is about a group of strangers in a small town who form a unique relationship with each other after surviving a random shooting at a California diner. We ran an early trailer for it back in 2008. As you get a glimpse of on the poster, the ensemble cast for Winged Creatures includes Kate Beckinsale, Dakota Fanning, Jackie Earle Haley, Jennifer Hudson, Josh Hutcherson, Guy Pearce, and Forest Whitaker. POSTER: Julie and Julia...

So in between playing the Wii version of Dead Rising, and sleeping, I have decided to post a pretty interesting poster. It's nothing visually special (except for Amy Adams looking hot, that seductress), but the film itself is an interesting piece of cinema. Check out the final poster for the upcoming Nora Ephron film, Julie and Julia, recently posted on Sony's Twitter!



Now, while I'm not the biggest Nora Ephron fan, the writer and director of Sleepless in Seattle, Mixed Nuts, Michael, You've Got Mail, I am a fan of this superb cast. Meryl Streep is, well, Meryl f****** Streep, and Amy Adams is such a phenominal young actress (please, if you haven't, go see Sunshine Cleaning, it's a great film). However, the supporting cast holds its own too, with the likes of the great Stanley Tucci, and the stellar young actor, Chris Messina, who is probably most famous from his role as the stuck up hubby from Vicki Christina Barcelona. The story is pretty fun, and while I'm sure it won't be anything more than a fun time, who knows, with a cast like that, you really can't go wrong. Oh, and in a summer of really testosterone pumping, chest beating, ball breakers, this is the perfect film to head out with your love, and have a date. Do it guys, it is a sure-fire hit.

The film follows Powell, a government employee who decides to cook her way through legendary cook Julia Child's classic cookbook, "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" in one year's time out of her small Queens kitchen. Powell blogs her daily experiences, gaining a loyal following along the way.
