One of the most well kept secrets in Hollywood recently has been the plot and storyline of the upcoming Christopher Nolan film, Inception. There have been leaked call sheets, April Fools Jokes, and everything between, all attempting to shine a bit of light on this script, which has been under the most impenetrable lock and key. However, via InContention, some plot details are allegedly leaking out. All with it's fair share of skepticism as well.
Here's the scoop:
“Inception” takes place in a world where we have developed a means by which we can enter people’s dreams. Leonardo DiCaprio’s character Jacob Hastley has been described as a “CEO type,” but he is also something of a criminal. He dives into people’s dreams to extract information.
Ellen Page will play Ariadne, a young college student studying in Paris who is a part of Jacob’s team (along with Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s Arthur and Tom Hardy’s Eames). Jacob’s team actually “creates” the dreams and Ariadne is an “architect” of the them. She engineers them.
When Jacob’s team enters the dreams, it is not via a machine such as “The Matrix” or “The Cell,” I’m told. It is via injection, and the technology can easily be transported in a suitcase. In one scene (featured briefly in the trailer, I believe), the team actually enters a person’s dream while on an airplane.
Cillian Murphy stars as Fischer, a business-type who is soon to become the head of a company. Jacob’s team is attempting to insert an idea into Fischer’s mind to compel him to separate the company into two smaller companies. The reasoning for this is unclear on my end.
While this is all great and wonderful, some have brought up quite a few holes. Here's one that The Playlist has pointed out:
But wait, Jacob Hastley? Sure that's the name listed on "Inception's" IMDB page but from what we gather it simply stems from an April Fool's Day joke courtesy of Script Shadow, so holes start to surface already. Plot wise though, it's any one's guess if they're on the money but, as they continue to write, it does sound potentially feasible. Many of the other characters' names mentioned in the report correctly stem from a call sheet leak though word has it they are the surnames, not first names of the characters.
So holes in this story already are starting. That said, there is no sure fire scoops here, so any one's guess is as good as the next person's.
If anything is for certain, that story sure sounds insanely interesting, and when more information gets leaked online, as I am sure it will very soon, check back here.

TRAILER: Christopher Nolan's Inception Teaser...
Boy oh boy, did this trailer EVER spark a bit of controversy on Friday. Here's the deal:
On Friday, we not only saw the release of Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds, but it was also Avatar Day. HOWEVER, the most interesting thing, at least that I hadn't seen, was the first teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan's upcoming film (I would say what type, but no one knows a thing about this project), Inception.
Now where does the controversy come from one may ask? Well, this was shown before Basterds on Friday, and was met with a mixed reaction. There were people, like me, FREAKING OUT about the trailer, and how not only it's the new Chris Nolan film, but there are PEOPLE FIGHTING ON WALLS, with one of those people being Joseph Gordon-Levitt. There were also the indecisive people, the ones who must have been dragged by a significant other. Then there are the people who genuinely dislike this trailer. While I'm not one of them, I don understand how that could be. It doesn't give you much in the way of plot, but then again, neither does anything released about the film so far. There was a mixed bag of boos and cheers, and it's quite shocking.
Make up your mind for yourself:
Here's all we know for sure about the film.
Inception features Leonardo DiCaprio as Jacob, a CEO-type, Marion Cotillard (La Vie en rose, Public Enemies) as his wife, Ellen Page (Juno) as a young college grad student named Ariadne, who is also DiCaprio’s sidekick, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Arthur, an associate working for DiCaprio. Ken Watanabe will play the film’s villain, a man named Saito, who is blackmailing Leonardo DiCaprio’s character. Tom Hardy (Bronson) plays Eames, a member of DiCaprio’s team. Cillian Murphy (Batman Begins, Sunshine) plays Fischer and Michael Caine is also involved.
Wally Pfister is returning as Nolan's cinematographer, which should come as no surprise based on the look of this trailer. Hans Zimmer is also returning, and this is one of my most anticipated films, I think ever. Imagine Chris Nolan, one of the most inventive guys in Hollywood, who just finished up a MASTERPIECE of action/thriller/comic book/hero cinema, not being restricted by some DC Universe or continuity. THIS is why I think if Nolan were to leave the Batman franchise, the world would be better for it, because we would get films like this, where as /film put it, Nolan is looking like he is going to map the human brain into a cityscape. Epic? Just a little f***ing bit.
What do YOU think?

PHOTO: Inception Begins Shooting...
This news is a bit straightforward, so all there really is to know is that Christopher Nolan's new film, Inception, has begun filming, and this photograph is proof (Taking Back Sunday reference anyone? No, whatever, moving on). It features (from left to right) Leonardo DiCaprio, Nolan, and Ken Watanabe.

NEWS: Batman 3 Not a Given With Nolan At The Helm...
This does come as quite a surprise, and not a good one, at least for fans of the Caped Crusader.
IGN is reporting that the rumor mill is a blaze with suggestions that Christopher Nolan's involvement with the inevitable sequel to The Dark Knight may not be 100%.
A trusted industry source for Batman-on-Film claims that it is going to take a herculean effort on the part of Warner Bros. to sell Nolan on doing a third Bat-film, confirming an old rumor that the studio has indeed compiled a short list of replacement candidates. So why is Nolan reportedly iffy on directing the film?
"The death of Heath Ledger in January of 2008 rocked Mr. Nolan hard. So hard that Chris was convinced that TDK was going to be it for him and Batman on film," according to BoF's source, adding that the Joker was envisioned as the villain in the third film.
Their source did also confirm that BoF was indeed correct when they reported that Nolan is currently developing a story for the film with his brother, Jonathan Nolan, and David Goyer, but we are still waiting until at least 2012 until Batman will be in theatres again, and maybe not until 2013.
BoF's source went so far as to say that, as of now, there is no story for Batman 3 though.
Tis is all bad news. Just look at the Spiderman and X-Men franchises for why a third Batman film is bound to dissapoint, particularly in the case of X3, when they also ended up switching directors. This is about as good of news as hearing that you are getting a root canal from a toddler with a katana. Just not something you want to hear as the night ends.
Who do YOU think should take over this franchise? I'm hoping this goes into the hands of Zack Snyder, who is on WB's short list. What about you?

NEWS: Nolan's Inception To Get $200 Million Budget?
It appears so.
Coming off of the MONSTER that was The Dark Knight, Christopher Nolan's next project will not only be another big budget film, but will be roughly 15 million dollars MORE expensive than his 2 1/2 hour superhero epic.
According to The Calgary Sun, Nolan's Inception will be shooting in Canada in the coming months, and not only do the mention a couple of location details, but they also report that the budget will be in the ballpark of 200 million dollars - or closer to $176.5 million if that first amount is actually Canadian dollars. All of this comes with the public knowing NOTHING about the film itself.
The Sun also reports that Inception will be shot in five countries, with most of it's photography being done in Kananaskis, just outside of Calgary.
"Nolan scouted nearby foothills and mountainous areas by helicopter and is said to have chosen Fortress Mountain as the main Alberta location."
The shoot will feature "hundreds, if not thousands, of local film workers starting this summer when construction on the elaborate set is due to begin." Shooting is set to start in November.
The only thing that really anyone knows about the film is that it's a "contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind." Which, as FirstShowing so eloquently put it, means that no one knows anything about this film. Talk about secrecy. This must have J.J. Abrams freaking out right now, as he is the relative king of cinematic secrecy. I love this news, and I love how under wraps the project is. It's a breathe of fresh air in the current world of being pelted with 30 TV spots a day about Iron Man or Wolverine, showing every scene shot during the films production.
What about you? What do you think about Nolan getting this huge budget?

NEWS: Joseph Gordon-Levitt Joins Inception...

Yesturday, I mentioned new details on Rian Johnson's next film, Looper. While I mentioned that film, I also discussed the fact that he is one of mayb 5 or 10 directors that, no matter the project, I give the benefit of the doubt to. Well, another one of those directors is Christopher Nolan.
Weither it's his first film, Following, or his last, The Dark Knight, this film maker has not only made a set of phenominal films, but has a few classics in that canon. His next film, Inception, sounds like it will be no different, and it's already solid cast, just got a lot stronger.
THR is reporting that 500 Days of Summer star Joseph Gordon-Levitt has joined the cast of Nolan's Inception in a role that has been vacated by James Franco, who was forced to leave due to scheduling conflicts. His role will be as an associate to the lead, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, in what has been described as a sci-fi film set within “the architecture of the mind.
The cast will also feature Hard Candy/Juno/Tracey Fragments star, Ellen Page.

NEWS: A Trio In Talks For Inception...
Well, aside from a few false April Fools pranks, there are a few pieces of news out there. Sure, I could talk about the newly announced Men In Black 3, but this is far more interesting. Variety is now reporting that a trio is in talks to join Leonardo DiCaprio in Chris Nolan's next film, Inception.
Warner Bros. is in talks with Marion Cotillard, Cillian Murphy and Ellen Page to join the cast of "Inception," which Christopher Nolan wrote and will direct as his next film.
Leonardo DiCaprio has already been set to star.
WB bought the spec preemptively before other studios got a crack at the material, which kept Warner in business with the filmmaker after smash hit "The Dark Knight" (Daily Variety, Feb. 12).More than one option(Co) Daily Variety
Filmography, Year, Role
(Co) Daily Variety
So, it looks like this film is shaping up to be one to really look out for, aside from simply the brilliance of the film maker. I think more so than the two big name leads, Murphy and Page, I'm really excited to see Cotillard in a Batman film. She's a brilliant actress, and one that I've been wanting to see more of since La Vie en Rose. She's next going to be seen in Public Enemies, and not shockingly, she looks amazing.
More news on this film as it develops, as it now has a release date, of July 16th, 2010.

NEWS: DiCaprio to star in Nolan's Inception...
So, it looks as though Christopher Nolan's next film, Inception, is set to get one hell of a cast. Variety is reporting that Leonardo DiCaprio has signed on to join the cast, as the first known signee.
Leonardo DiCaprio will star in "Inception," the science-fiction film that Christopher Nolan ("The Dark Knight") wrote and will direct as his next pic at Warner Bros.
The project shoots this year and is slated to be released in summer 2010, with Nolan and Emma Thomas producing. DiCaprio's deal is in final negotiations.
Script has been kept under wraps but the studio calls it a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind.
DiCaprio, coming off "Revolutionary Road" and "Body of Lies," will next be seen starring in the Martin Scorsese-directed "Shutter Island" at Paramount.
Another actor that has been rumored to be signing on sometime soon is Ellen Page, so this is shaping up to be a really great cast, something all of Nolan's major films, all but his first, Following, had. He's worked with huge ensemble casts, and it looks like this one may not be much different.
Not to much is known about this film, but hearing it be called a sci-fi thriller set within the mind has me insanely interested. There is something intellecutally stimulating about many of Nolan's films, and that is something that I really admire. Take the Dark Knight for example. It's a flawed film, but it's flawed due to it's ambition and subtext. It wanted to say something, and lost some quality in the meantime. Knowing that he is striving to make something more than just an action, or in Inceptions case, thriller, is something I wish more directors would attempt. More on this film as it comes out.

NEWS: Batman 3 Will Need To Wait...
So it looks like The Caped Crusader will be put on the shelf for a while. Reports are that Chris Nolan will NOT be helming the third film in his Batman franchise right out of the gate, but instead, he will be holding that off for a while, in place of a original piece called Inception...Thanks to Comingsoon.net for the heads up...
Christopher Nolan has set up his next project with Warner Bros., an original screenplay he wrote called Inception. The "Dark Knight" director hopes to shoot the sci-fi action film in the summer for a release during summer 2010.
Nolan will produce with partner Emma Thomas, who served as a producer on The Dark Knight.
"Chris Nolan is a visionary filmmaker who continually raises the bar with each movie he makes," Warner Bros. Pictures Group president Jeff Robinov said. "We are thrilled to be collaborating again with him and Emma on this exciting new motion picture."
Inception is described as "a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind."
This pushes back any potential filming on a third Batman film, but three years -- and The Prestige -- passed between Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Nolan has also long been attached to direct a big-screen adaptation of the British TV series "The Prisoner" for producer Scott Stuber at Universal.
This is brilliant news. He is still attached to the third Batman film, so he will be doing it, but it's good to see this brilliant of an auteur go out of that comfort zone for something he created. And look, The Prestige came between Begins and Dark Knight, so I have complete faith that not only will this film be amazing, but so will the third Batman film. Honestly, I have more interest in this piece than the Dark Knight sequel, so I'm excited.
-In other news, I saw RockNRolla and rewatched Vicky Cristina Barcelona on DVD and both films are great. RockNRolla isn't Guy Ritchies best, but it's vastly superior to Revolver, and while it's not as good as Lock Stock or Snatch, it's a return to form, and one hell of a step up from Revolver. Sherlock Holmes is next for the guy, and I can't wait. Oh, and it had one HELL of a soundtrack.
Vicky Cristina Barcelona is brilliant, and just go check out my old review of it. It's better every time I see it...

NEWS: More Nolan Interview News...
Hey guys! So, on Monday, I let you guys in on a new interview from the LA Times in which director Christopher Nolan discusses everything from Heath Ledger to the box office sucess of The Dark Knight. Well, now the final part of the three part series is up over at the LA Times, and this time he talks about the possibilites or lack there of of a Justice League film featuring a "Nolan Universe" Batman...
"I don’t think our Batman, our Gotham, lends itself to that kind of cross-fertilization. It goes back to one of the first things we wrangled with when we first started putting the story together: Is this a world in which comic books already exist? Is this a world in which superheroes already exist? If you think of "Batman Begins" and you think of the philosophy of this character trying to reinvent himself as a symbol, we took the position -- we didn’t address it directly in the film, but we did take the position philosophically -- that superheroes simply don’t exist. If they did, if Bruce knew of Superman or even of comic books, then that’s a completely different decision that he’s making when he puts on a costume in an attempt to become a symbol. It’s a paradox and a conundrum, but what we did is go back to the very original concept and idea of the character. In his first appearances, he invents himself as a totally original creation."
Next he talks about the heads over at Warner Brothers pressuring him into doing another Batman film...
"They’re being extremely gracious. I have a very good relationship with the studio. They know that I really needed to go on holiday and take some time to figure what I want to do next. They’ve been very respectful of that, which is terrific and one of the reasons I enjoy working with Warner Bros."
Finally, he discusses what it would mean for the cast and crew if the late Heath Ledger were to gain an Oscar nod for his great performance as The Joker...
"I think the thing that has always been important to me in light of Heath’s death is the responsibility I’ve felt to his work. The responsibility of crafting the film in such a way that his performance came across the way he intended. Clearly, that has been the case. That’s one of the reasons I take such pride in the film.
I felt a great wave of relief, really, as people first started to see the performance and it was clear that they were getting the performance. It’s easy to forget with everything that’s happened what an enormous challenge it was for Heath to take on this iconic role. He rose to that challenge so admirably that any expression of people being excited or moved by his performance is a wonderful thing. Whatever form that takes. People coming to see his performance and getting it. It's been extremely satisfying for all of us already. Anything that adds to that would be wonderful."
What are your thoughts on this information? Do you want Nolan to get back to work on another Batman film, or should he take a little break from it and get back to his more creative roots?
Here are the other two parts of this interview...
