NEWS: Depp To Be Sinatra?

Earlier this morning, it was announced that Martin Scorsese had agreed to direct a biopic based on the life of Frank Sinatra for Universal Studios.

Well, there is an interesting back and fourth between Scorsese and the studio, on who the two parties would like to be in the lead. Deadline Hollywood is reporting that, as one may be able to guess, Scorsese is wanting his new DeNiro, Leonardo DiCaprio, while the studio is pushing towards having Johnny Depp. For those of you wondering, the lead in this film will NOT have to sing, which was confirmed along with the Scorsese story, as Frank Sinatra Enterprises has agreed to the film, allowing for the master versions of the songs to be used.

I personally think that this is a win win. While I think DiCaprio may look a bit more like Sinatra, I think Depp has more of the charisma that made Sinatra, well, Sinatra. Both are top 5 Best Actors working today, and this is going to be an exciting back and forth to see who wins the battle.

The film is going to be penned by Phil Alden Robinson.

Looks like the weekends can bring us some news. In this nights 11th hour, Pop Sugar has graced us all with the first photo from the set of The Rum Diary, starring the subject of the photo, Johnny Depp. Enjoy!



Here's the synopsis for The Rum Diary!

Based on Hunter S. Thompson's novel of the same name, The Rum Diary follows Depp as Paul Kemp, a divorced alcoholic and struggling novelist who decides to kick around in San Juan until his ship comes in, working as a journalist for a newspaper that's on its last legs, drinking gallons of rum and experimenting with LSD. With his new friend Bob Sala by his side, Kemp becomes entangled in a corrupt hotel development scheme with a slick PR consultant named Sanderson. TRAILER: Public Enemies...

So, yesturday the first poster for the upcoming Michael Mann film, Public Enemies was released. Well, the first trailer has just dropped, and it looks damn good...



HERE'S THE PLOT SYNOPSIS...
In the action-thriller Public Enemies, acclaimed filmmaker Michael Mann directs Johnny Depp, Christian Bale and Academy Award® winner Marion Cotillard in the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp)—the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Edgar Hoover’s fledgling FBI and its top agent, Melvin Purvis (Bale), and a folk hero to much of the downtrodden public.

No one could stop Dillinger and his gang. No jail could hold him. His charm and audacious jailbreaks endeared him to almost everyone—from his girlfriend Billie Frechette (Cotillard) to an American public who had no sympathy for the banks that had plunged the country into the Depression.But while the adventures of Dillinger’s gang—later including the sociopathic Baby Face Nelson (Stephen Graham) and Alvin Karpis (Giovanni Ribisi)—thrilled many, Hoover (Billy Crudup) hit on the idea of exploiting the outlaw’s capture as a way to elevate his Bureau of Investigation into the national police force that became the FBI. He made Dillinger America’s first Public Enemy Number One and sent in Purvis, the dashing “Clark Gable of the FBI.’’

However, Dillinger and his gang outwitted and outgunned Purvis’ men in wild chases and shootouts. Only after importing a crew of Western ex-lawmen (newly baptized as agents) and orchestrating epic betrayals—from the infamous “Lady in Red’’ to the Chicago crime boss Frank Nitti—were Purvis, the FBI and their new crew of gunfighters able to close in on Dillinger. Public Enemeies is set to hit theaters on July 1st 2009.

To me, this is an interesting film. The cast is amazing, Michael Mann is a great filmmaker, and his gritty, almost cinema verite style is an interesting contrast to the period that this film is set. The period looks completely sold, but seeing it shot in what looks to be digital, it is a bit jarring. More on this film as it gets released!

POSTER + PHOTOS: Public Enemies...

There may not be a single bigger cast set to hit the big screen than the one that will be featured in the upcoming Michael Mann film, Public Enemies.

Opening in theaters on July 1st, the Michael Mann-directed action-thriller is the story of legendary Depression-era outlaw John Dillinger (Depp)—the charismatic bank robber whose lightning raids made him the number one target of J. Hey guys! I've got some pretty sweet stuff to let you know about, so here are your headlines...

- It looks like Mr. Johnny Depp plans on keeping himself busy over the next couple of years. He has recently signed on for Pirates of The Carribean 4, The Lone Ranger (he will be Tonto), and he's still on to be The Mad Hatter in the upcoming Alice In Wonderland film helmed by Tim Burton.
- Cars 2 will now be released in summer 2011 instead of the holiday 2012 release...
- Oprah has just signed on to be a voice actor in the upcoming 2-D animated release from Disney, The Princess and The Frog...
- The rumor of an I Am Legend prequel seems to be real, as WB says put the production wheels in motion...

Thoughts? I think this is the best thing I've seen from the movie since it's first poster. The script has been getting shit reviews, but I'm still really excited to check this out. Brolin looks amazing...What do you guys think?

Hey guys! It's been a busy weekend over here, and this week looks to be just the same...here are your headlines!

- Michael Caine has dropped a big one, if what he has said is true. Here is a snippet of an interview taken from MTV's Splash Page...


“I was with [a Warner Bros.] executive and I said, ‘Are we going to make [a sequel to The Dark Knight]?’ They said yeah. I said, ‘How the hell are we going to top Heath? And he says ‘I’ll tell you how you top Heath — Johnny Depp as The Riddler and Philip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin.’ I said, ‘Shit, they’ve done it again!’” [Laughs]


Chris Nolan is still on vacation, but people close to him have said he wants to keep the theme going of using smaller named actors in the leads. However, this goes perfectly in line with what co-writer David Goyer has said in that the third film will be based around a couple of lesser known villians...thoughts???

- Rumor has it that Will Smith has been approached to play Captain America...
- Fox Searchlight has won the bidding war for Darren Aronofsky's Golden Lion winning film, The Wrestler...Expect a December release, just in time to get Mickey Rourke a possible Oscar nod...
- Finally, Bangkok Dangerous' 7.8 million buck opening has been the worst since Dickie Roberts: Former Child Star...

Lets put some rumors to rest...

So, as you all know, I normally talk about some big rumors, and a few times, they don't pan out. However, the following two rumors that I've talked about have been fufilled...

- Brad Pitt has OFFICIALLY JOINED INGLORIOUS BASTARDS!!! Thanks to The Movie Blog for the info....

Today we get word that Brad Pitt has signed on the dotted line and will star in Tarantino’s Inglorious Bastards and joining him in early casting are Eli Roth (director of Hostel) and B.J. Novak (”The Office”, Knocked Up).

Pitt will play a Tennessee hillbilly who assembles a team of eight Jewish-American soldiers. Eli Roth will play the role of Sgt. Donnie Donowitz, and Tarantino is locking in the other seven American actors who make up the Bastards team. Novak is expected to play PFC Utivich, described as a soldier of slight build who comes from New York.


That is huge news, and makes me just more excited for this film. QT's been writing this thing for about 20 years now, and the scripts been floating around and getting rave reviews, so expect this one to be huge. Shooting starts later this year, and it will open next years Cannes Film Festival...Oh, and Nastassja Kinski is in talks to join the film...yes, Kinski, the daughter of the brilliant Klaus Kinski...call me excited...

- The second rumor, and we saw this coming, was that Johnny Depp would be staring as the Mad Hatter in Tim Burton's new adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. Well, it's 100% true. No information has been leaked about the possible shooting schedule, so more news on this as it develops...

In other news...
- Indy 5, yes, Indiana Jones 5, which is allegedly in the works, will NOT be based around Mutt Williams, at least if George Lucas has any control (and I must say, I wish he wouldn't...)
- The feature film adaptation of Flash Gordon is back in production...
