REVIEW: Terminator: Salvation...

This summer has seen the return of many storied film franchises. Star Trek, X-Men, and now, the most beloved, at least by me, Terminator.

Under the control of Kalamazoo native McG, Terminator: Salvation is the newest film in the line of sci-fi action thrillers made famous by James Cameron, and the father of Arnold Schwarzenegger's career. However, with the last film, Terminator 3: Rise of The Machines being lackluster at best, can this film redeem this franchise?

Set in post-apocalyptic 2018, Terminator Salvation follows John Connor, who is the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. However, the future Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright, a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet’s operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind, a factory of T-800's, and a cameo from a certain Governor of California.

Starting with Terminator, the Terminator franchise has seen its brilliant pieces of cinema (Terminator and T2), as well as its less than stellar outings (the aforementioned T3), and with Salvation, they have taken many steps in the right direction.

Throughout production of this film, there was much talk, as to not only who was cast in the film, but most controversially, in who WB picked to direct the film. Charlie's Angels director, McG. Whereas many of his previous films have been light and airy, with his typical corny direction, this is completely different.

From the very outset, you are thrust right into this war, and the world it's consuming. It's 2018, and Salvation is set in a post Judgment Day California. The film looks dark and the action is balls to the wall. There is one sequence in particular, a tow truck/ducati terminator chase that is not only set up after an intense action set piece, but what follows is not only completely ridiculous and can be seen as uncalled for, but what I saw it as was an intense and well done action set piece, of which there are many preceding it and following it. This film takes it's metallic fist and grips your balls, and drags you around by them for two hours. While this film takes a distinctly high budget fell into this series, which was created on a much more conservative budget, I think for what the film does action wise, it works. You get planted into the middle of the action, and it works, for the most part.

The cast does there best here. Bale plays yet another troubled man in the prophesied resistance leader, John Connor, and he's stellar. Yes, the role is one note, but that's not necessarily his fault. Anton Yelchin, who plays Connor's soon to be father Kyle Reese(yes, I know, it's weird) is great here. It's not a particularly heavy role, but it will be in subsequent films, and I feel completely comfortable with him in this role. He's a phenomenal young actor, and he only can grow as the films go on. However, the show stealer here has to be Sam Worthington as the human/machine (no spoilers there), Marcus Wright.

We first meet the death row inmate in the opening scene. He is about to be executed, and instead of simply being buried, he is given a neo-second chance in a special experiment, that he donates his body to. Little does he know that the experiment is for Cyberdyne, which later creates the A.I. network known as Skynet. After his death in 2003, Skynet forms, and decides to execute an attack on the whole of humanity. After a raid on an underground Skynet factory, Wright is awoken, dazed, and good hearted, yet left with no memory.

Where Bale seems to be hitting a single note throughout the film, Wright, who is the neo-main character of Salvation, is pitch perfect. He has the heart and mentality of a human, yet he has the makings of a flesh covered machine. Near the true climax of the film, he discovers the reason for his making, and that scene alone makes him an actor that everyone must pay attention too. He epitomizes what makes this character not only interesting on its own, but he also is the closest thing you get to to any emotional involvement.

That is this films major flaw. This film wants to try and attempt to be an emotionally stimulating outing, but this screenplay almost completely nullifies that. While it's not a horrible piece of writing, it is almost as mechanical and paint by numbers as one of Skynet's factories. It is chock full of cliches, that, while not drawing you out of the experience, make it less true. Screenwriters John D. Brancato and Michael Ferris take the stock ideas of the Terminator franchise, robot sent to save someone, and simply make a fourth film with that story, instead of taking the franchise in a new direction. It's a big film with big ideas, that is given a small amount of time. There are also copious amounts of plot holes that really leave this film out in the open.

Another thing that makes this series such a classic film franchise, is it's intelligence within an action/thriller/horror setting. While there are moments of that here, there are far to many side stories that, while necessary for subsequent films, take away from the message a bit.

That said, there are many things to chew on here for the more intellectual film goer.

The main thing that this franchise talks about, almost to a fault, is time, and how it can or can't be changed. The biggest thing that this film tries to convey is the idea of fate, and if fate can be changed. While that can be seen a little bit here, the message for T4 is what makes a human, well, a human. Is it our heart? Is it our compassion? Is it our personalities? This film takes a look at that, and while it's not the most perfect allegory ever put to film, it does work.

All of that said, this film works as not only some form of thought provoking entertainment, but as just that, entertainment. Where other thrillers recently leave you not only wanting more things to mentally chew on walking out of the theatres as well as something to keep you compelled while in them, this film works on both levels. Sure, it's a much stronger action film, probably the most action packed one so far this year, but it also leaves you talking afterwards. The script is schlocky, but is saved by great performances, and the look of this film is perfect. Not the best in the series, but it's a welcome addition, and one everyone should check out.

TRAILER: Terminator Salvation...

So, this Friday sees the release of the HOTLY anticipated geekgasm that is Watchmen, and while that is all I really care about, there are two huge layers of frosting on the cake. With the theatrical release, comes the newest trailers for Star Trek, and Terminator: Salvation, the latter of which can be seen at the link below...

CLICK HERE FOR THE T4 TRAILER (via /Film) I will embed the trailer when it hits YouTube...

I absolutely love this trailer. It gives us much more of the story, at least that of Marcus Wright, and it proves that McG may have finally found his calling. I think this may be much better than we all expect.

Here's the plot synopsis...

In the highly anticipated new installment of “The Terminator” film franchise, set in post-apocalyptic 2018, Christian Bale stars as John Connor, the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet’s operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind.

Check it out on the big screen this Friday in front of Watchmen.

Oh, fyi, the Watchmen Motion Comics, the graphic novel just in motion, comes out on DVD tomorrow. If you refuse to read the book, pick this up so you know what is going on in the feature film.

NEWS: Thom Yorke and Gustavo Santaolalla to Do Music For T4?

So, aside from the Grammy's, not much in the way of news has arisen this weekend (sure, there are the BAFTA's, but really, I think the Oscar's are almost pointless, so whatever). However, that has changed, as there happens to be a big rumor making it's way around the web, coming out of the N.Y. Comicon.

It looks like Radiohead leader Thom Yorke, and the brilliant composer, Gustavo Santaolalla (Motorcycle Diaries and all Inarittu films), will be helping in the creation of the Terminator Salvation score. Thanks to The Playlist for the info...

We already know that Danny Elfman is composing the music to director McG's "Terminator Salvation" and that the original theme written by Brad Fiedel will probably be included if it "seems appropriate," Elfman said.

However, at the New York Comic Con this weekend during the "Terminator Salvation" panel, McG -- who also called Christian Bale on his phone, more on that later -- said he had reached out to Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Academy Award-winning Argentinian composer Gustavo Santaolalla ("Babel," "21 Grams," "Brokeback Mountain") to write some music for the film.

"We talked about Gustavo getting together with Thom Yorke from Radiohead which I thought would be very interesting. And they may still do a couple of sounds for the movie," McG said sounding hopeful. As for why he chose Danny Elfman? "I needed someone who understood film as a whole and understood the delicate nature of humanity and the the brutality of the machines."

While the thought of a Santaolalla/Yorke collaboration makes us froth at the mouth, we're not sure "Terminator Salvation" would be the best place to showcase those kinds of potentially amazing sounds. We're also a bit skeptical about the collaboration happening in time, or either artist agreeing to the McG-made request, but we're sure this report will flush some news out there either way.

I love the idea. I am a huge Radiohead fan, and there is no better film score composer working today, my number one with a brilliant and sonic bullet, than Mr. Gustavo. Check out this video for Radiohead's Talk Show Host, from the Romeo + Juliet Soundtrack, along with OK Computer, I beieve.

Now, witness the brilliance of Gustavo Santaolalla...

Gahh, this would be a match made in my heaven, so here's to hoping it happens...

TRAILER: Terminator Salvation...

So, with me being home and all, I can finally get my daily dose of Reelz Channel. Today, while watching Dailies, I got the chance to check out the most recent Terminator Salvation Trailer, that was released early last week. I had really no interest in the film, until now. Not only does this trailer look amazing, but Christian Bale stars, and Dark Knight co-writer, Johnathan Nolan, had his hand in the script. Enjoy the kickassness (I'm coining that word by the way)that is the Terminator Salvation trailer...

NEWS: Gran Torino, Ben Stiller, and Terminator 4...

Hey guys! Here are your headlines for this Thursday, the 23rd of October...

- It looks as though Speilberg has dropped out of the film, The Trial of The Chicago 7, a film about the 1968 riots outside of the Democratic Convention...However, a director has been found to take over, and it is none other than Ben Stiller. Paul Greengrass, director of United 93 and the last two Bourne films, was originally tapped for the project, but it seems like Stiller will take over the film. Thoughts?

- Brilliant actor Javier Bardem, has signed on to star in the upcoming film from 21 Grams/Babel/Amores Perros director Alejandro Gonzalez Inaritu, called Biutiful...Thanks to the guys over at /film for the info...

Javier Bardem (No Country For Old Men) will star in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu’s (21 Grams, Babel) Biutiful, which begins shooting in Barcelona next week. Inarritu wrote the script himself, his first stand alone effort after much-publicized break-up with screenwriter Guillermo Arriaga.

According to Variety, Spanish-language film is about “a man embroiled in shady dealings who is confronted by a childhood friend, now a policeman.” Argentine actress Maricel Álvarez is also rumored to be involved with the project. Rodrigo Prieto will return as director of photography. Prieto was the cinematographer on all Inarritu’s films, Brokeback Mountain, 25th Hour, 8 Mile and Frida. The music will be composed by Gustavo Santaolalla, Academy Award Winner for Brokeback Mountain and Babel.

This actually may be more interesting to me than any film, outside of Watchmen, that should be released next year. It's a Spanish language film, starring one of the best actors working today, from one of the best directors working today, and scored by the brilliant composer, Gustavo Santaolalla. What are your thoughts?

- Seth Green is set to direct an adaptation of the comic book Freshmen...

- Here is the first poster from the new Clint Eastwood film, Gran Torino...

Wow, when I'm that old, I only dream to be that badass...

- McG has written a few interesting quotes on the Terminator Salvation website about the hotly anticipated film...Thanks to /film again for being brililant and posting the noteworthy ones...
McG has posted a new blog on the Terminator Salvation website. Here are the major take-aways:

Principal Photography has wrapped
Christian Bale and Sam Worthington have been sown early cuts and “they seem pleased with where the film is headed.”

“Our focus is on story and character, but it’s fun diving into the world of visual effects.”

“We want the patina of the machines to be dirty and heavy and perfectly realistic - that’s why we built so much practically with Stan Winston.”

On producing revolutionary effects like Terminator 2: “There’s one sequence in particular where we’re trying to achieve something that’s never been done before. I don’t want to talk about it because we haven’t been successful yet…”

Terminator 2 editor Conrad Buff is cutting the film: “It feels great to have his confidence in the movie. I take his opinion very seriously, he provides a daily litmus test for what is worthy of a Terminator film.”

About the story: “This is a story of two destinies colliding. Connor is part of a resistance comprised of the ethnicities that make up the globe. This film is so much more that just Los Angeles. It reflects the global crisis of man, all of man versus machine.”

Well, this is all good news I guess, but I really want to SEE something from it. The teaser before The Dark Knight was interesting, but only because it was released so quick after the film had wrapped. I'm not really looking forward to the film, but it's on my radar, and these notes help. What about you guys?

- Finally, as many of you may have heard, rumor has it that Zac Effron will star alongside Johnny Depp in Pirates 4...Sources have heard that the rumor is indeed true, so more on this as it develops, as this may just ruin any hope I had for the film...

That's all I've got for now! Come back later for more news and notes!
