WATERFRONT FILM FEST REVIEW: Peter and Vandy...

There are very few negatives when going to a film festival.

You are not only introduced to new and interesting films, actors, and film makers, but the atmosphere breeds entertainment. However, when a film is not good, it hits especially hard. That was not a problem for Peter and Vandy though, as the film is not only great, but could very well be one of the 10 best films so far this year.

Peter and Vandy is a film that features an interesting premise. The story is told in a set of flashbacks/forwards, however, it's not disjointed as you may think. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end (sort of), that is set in Manhattan. It tells the story of Peter, a neurotic 20 something who apologizes a bit to much, and who happens to meet Vandy, a beautiful young woman with a penchant for art. The film goes from the beginning of the relationship to where it is in the present, and every twisted point during their relationship. I enjoyed almost every second of it.

This film would fall flat, as most romance dramas do, if the cast were to be weak. However, this film excels, mainly because the leads are stellar. The film stars Jason Ritter (who may be most famous for his role in Joan of Arcadia) and while his performance does come off a bit one note, at least near the middle of the film, he does take a turn, and the way he is able to emote with his face really brings a depth and emotion to his otherwise sweet, but one note, character. Also, he takes a turn as the relationship grows, that is not only realistic (which I will talk more about in a minute), but really brings the viewer back into not only his character, but their relationship.

His love interest is the up and coming actress Jess Weixler, who after her turn in the indie cult horror film, Teeth, has her up on my list of "actress to look out for". This has her even higher on the list. Like her counterpart, the best scenes involve the camera lingering on her face, allowing her to move the story along with the emotional arch without exposition, something not many films attempt to do. As with her previous film, Teeth, she is able to use her face to do so many things for the film, that it really makes the film all the more enjoyable. She's got great comedic timing, and probably the most important aspect of a relationship film is the chemistry between the two main leads, and this film has that, in spades.

That may be the true star of this film. The film may have flaws (it lags a bit in the middle, the pacing is weird, and the opening 10 minutes feature some of the most awkward and awful acting this year), but what makes the film so great, and something you should see, is the relationship between the two. These two people's relationship is so real and easily relateable, that everyone knows what these people are going through. The film is basically a drama that ponders the question, "how did we get like this?" The film follows the two leads through ups, downs, ups, and then more downs, and every moment in between, all of which are wrought with so much truth and earnestness, that it really had me laughing, and near tears in some of the more emotional moments.

There is one scene in particular, that really worked for me. It is a simplistic scene, simply a discussion between two people about their relationship. Peter is discussing how he isn't happy in the relationship, and the way that he is able to bring so much truth and heart to the scene, along with Weixler bringing such earnestness to the role as a woman who has put as much into a relationship as anyone could. The way that that scene is not only played but also edited really left me with a pit in my gut, and was the shining scene in a film chock full of them. It's a discussion between two people who truly care for each other, and would do anything for each other, discussing how their relationship can or can't work. It's just a look at the most important and distinct moments in the discussion, and in a film full of the poignant moments in a relationship, that along with the editing, it really stuck with me.

The film also adds to this feeling with the look. Writer/director Jay DiPietro is a first time director, but the film doesn't fit that bill. It's not a big budget film, but the independent feel gives it it's own distinct style. There aren't any flashy tracking shots, or dramatic dolly shots, but it does allow the story and actors to breathe, and become more fleshed out instead of simply being characters. The film is more cinematic than a documentary, but in the vein of the upcoming Paper Heart, it has much more of a documentary feel (with flashy editing), than a truly cinematic styles.

Sure, the film has some flaws. The main point that this film fails in is its pacing. While the moments in the film are interesting and very engaging, the editing and the timing of these scenes doesn't allow for maximum enjoyment. You have the beginning of the film being awfully awkward, and while it's understandable, it to to high of a degree, and the performances in these scenes are not good at all. Then you have the film ramping up, and then beginning to hit some mud near the middle. The film is still enjoyable, but its not nearly as strong of a film in these moments. They are more the exception than the rule for this film, but it does effect it as a whole.

However, this is truly a must see film. It's something that EVERYBODY can relate to, and is one that, unless you have NEVER been in a relationship, will leave you feeling a cornucopia of emotion. You'll be happy one moment, than near tears the next, as this is not only a great film, but easily one of the most real films of this year, so far. Just go see this movie already!

WATERFRONT FILM FEST REVIEW: Surfing 50 States...

I love a good trip.

The first film from directors/producers/everythingers Jonno Durrant and Stefan Hunt also happened to be the opening night film for the 11th Annual Waterfront Film Festival here in Saugatuck. It was a fitting way to kick off this years film fest.

Surfing 50 States is about as deep in plot as it sounds. It's not so much a narrative film or narrative style documentary, as it is a travel log, and it knows that. It follows the aforementioned Durrant and Hunt as they attempt to surf the 50 states of the USA. They surf water on the waterfront states, but when they get to land locked areas like Idaho, things not only get interesting, but they get creative.

While the film doesn't do much outside of following the two on their trip, that in and of itself, makes it a worthwhile watch. The true star of the film isn't the two men we follow, it is the people who allow them to stay in their homes, tow them as they try to surf a tiny lake, or help them fix their oft-broken down ice cream truck. I think this film really shines in the interchanges between the surfers and the people they encounter. Each person has his or her own moment to shine, and instead of being a simple stereotype of the area he or she is from, the people are fleshed out and allowed to breathe and become full fledged people within this film. There is one scene in particular, taking place in one of the Great Lakes States, involving a small group of 15 or so surfers who, while the waves are small, love surfing Lake Michigan. The sense of comradery and family is so heartwarming, that you really can't help but get involved in not only the people involved directly in the film, but for the people they run into.

Whereas, the film begins to falter a bit in the scenes that don't involve that ideal. It's basically a film in the form of a travel log that you would make with your friends on a cross country road trip, and while that is a fresh way to give a documentary, but it also makes it seem to play as a 90 minute music video. The soundtrack (which is beyond super) is constantly on in the background, and since the film must cover 50 states in an economic time frame, it jumps from state to state rather quickly, which takes away from the significance of some of these scenes.

That said, the film is extremely enjoyable, and very intriguing, which for a documentary, is quite important. If you are a fan of films in the style of say a skateboarding video or basically a surf video/documentary, then this is easily the one film you will want to see at this festival. The two leads ooze charisma and charm, and the film likewise oozes comedy and enjoyment. It isn't a strong film in form of narrative, as the basic conflict comes in the form of a car that continually breaks down, so it's not the strongest film, but it is one that you won't forget, especially the people that you will learn about. It's a solid documentary, that anyone can truly enjoy, and should, even if it's on DVD.

SURFING 50 STATES: 7/10

I will have MUCH more from this film festival as the weekend progresses, and you can expect reviews of 4-6 films within the coming days. Stay tuned!

NEWS: Two Directors Get HUGE Projects...

It looks like two big name horror directors, or at least up and coming horror directors, are getting their chance at some genuine franchises.

To start off, the most recent news, that literally hit the interwebs about an hour ago over at Bloody Disgusting. It appears that The Decent director Neil Marshall is nearly set to sign on the dotted line to take the helm of the upcoming Predator reboot, Predators. With the film Dog Soldiers, Marshall got his name out in a big way. I have yet to see that film, but it got the attention of indie haven Lionsgate, who financed The Decent, which culminated in the creation of one of the best horror films of the past 10 years, and sure, Doomsday wasn't great, but the guy has an insane sense of genre, so to me, it's a perfect fit.

The film is written by Alex Litvak, and is some-what based on a treatment created by now producer Robert Rodrigeuz. It sounds like an interesting premise (the time leading up to Alien, which may be a completely "Alien" filled film, meaning no humans, a very interesting idea), and this simply gives me more excitement, and for such a dead franchise, that is really what is needed.

On a similar note, CHUD is now reporting (with a Variety confirmation) that director Marcus Nispel is set to helm the upcoming reboot/remake of Conan the Barbarian. Now THAT is an interesting idea! Sure, Pathfinder is an awful film, but I still have a ton of faith in Nispel as a genre director.

Along in the running was the afformentioned Marshall, and while I tend to agree with the interwebs in that I think HE would have been a better fit, after seeing Nispel's latest film, Friday the 13th, the man knows what the fans of a franchise expect (he also helmed the stellar Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake), and with the inevitable casting of an unknown as Conan, I think he will be able to put his stylistic stamp on this surefire R-rated hit. It's going to be bloody, it's going to be intense, and hopefully Nispel will continue his streak of solid genre films. It is being written by Outlander scribes Dirk Blackman and Howard McCain, and is said to simply be a darker take on the original novels. While it's not going to be anything more than a blood filled action film, really, I would be more excited for my balls to direct this film instead of the much talked about Brett Ratner adaptation. At least my balls have style.

What do YOU think about these two announcements?

FIRST LOOK: Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett...

Directed by music video director Floria Sigismondi, The Runaways tells the story of the famous all girl punk group, that launched the careers of artists including Joan Jett and Willa Ford. Starring in the said film is Twilight star Kristen Stewart, and while the film has not started shooting a shot yet, the people over at Jezebel have picked up a photo of the star getting prepped for what is a perfect role for the indie starlett. Starring along side Dakota Fanning, the film will follow the band through their rise, and the ultimate conclusion, their rough break up. Check out the photo, and tell me what you think! I personally find it awesome, and think that this may be an instance of sheer perfect casting...

TRAILER: Scorsese's Shutter Island...

In a late piece of news, today Paramount released the awesome and chilling first trailer for the upcoming adaptation of Dennis Lahane's novel, Shutter Island, directed by legend Martin Scorsese. The film looks dark and along with the creepy premise, looks very creepy stylistically. It has hints at great performances, and with Scorsese, you can count on the film having a great soundtrack and a stunning visual style. Check out the trailer below, and see for yourself!

“But nothing at Ashecliffe Hospital is what it seems. And neither is Teddy Daniels. Is he there to find a missing patient? Or has he been sent to look into rumors of Ashecliffe’s radical approach to psychiatry? The closer Teddy and Chuck get to the truth, the more elusive it becomes, and the more they begin to believe that they may never leave Shutter Island. Because someone is trying to drive them insane. . .” The film also stars Mark Ruffalo, Ben Kingsley, Michelle Williams, Patricia Clarkson, and Jackie Earle Haley. Watch the trailer in High Definition on Apple.com. Shutter Island is scheduled to hit theaters on October 2nd 2009.

FIRST LOOK: James Franco As Allen Ginsburg In HOWL...

One of the coolest and most interesting films that I think we will be seeing a lot more of in the coming future, leading up to its release, is Howl. Very little has been released about this film, most of which I will discuss below, but the first real photo from the Gus Van Sandt produced film has been released. The film stars James Franco as Allen Ginsberg, the famous Beat Poet who faced an obscenity trial in 1957 for the publication of his poem, Howl.

Not only does this photo sell me on the look of the film and how it will most certainly sell the time period, but the cast, and particularly the director, has me over the moon about this piece. Coming to us from Times Of Harvey Milk (Oscar winning documentary) Rob Epstein, who also wrote the screenplay, the film stars James Franco, Jeff Daniels, Mary-Louise Parker (of Weeds fame), and David Straithairn. The photo is our first look at Franco and his costar, Aaron Tveit who plays Peter Orlovsky, long time friend and fellow poet. It all sounds great to me, and hopefully, we will see more of this film in the near future. Check out the photo below!

FIRST LOOK: Mickey Rourke in Iron Man 2...

This photo has been out since Monday I believe, but I have decided to wait to post this, just to see what all comes out of it via the interwebs, or if other photos are posted, because this has not hit well with fans of the character of Blacklash, and fans of Iron Man and the first film. However, it kind of works for me.

The film hasn't really had many things released, but what we do know is that Rourke's character Ivan Vanko will not only become the character of Blacklash/Whiplash, but it will also incorporate points from the character of Crimson Dynamo, i.e. why he has the powersuit in the photo. So he will have a powersuit AND some badass whips. Sounds pretty cool to me. Also, Rourke looks surly as hell, and his look will hopefully add a bit of grunginess to the very prestine and clean cut world of Iron Man. The photo is VERY basic and arguably a silly one at that, but it does kind of work for me. Anyways, check it out below!!

Here's Iron Man 2's premise (via WikiPedia)

In an interview with USA Today, Jon Favreau revealed that the sequel is set 6 months after the events of Iron Man, and he also stated that Stark's revealing of his identity is taking its toll on him. Favreau revealed their version of Iron Man's comic book nemesis the Mandarin "allows us to incorporate the whole pantheon of villains", while S.H.I.E.L.D. will continue to have a major role.[1]

During development, Favreau said the film would explore Stark's alcoholism, but it would not be "the Leaving Las Vegas version".[1] Downey said, while promoting the first film, that Stark would probably develop a drinking problem as he is unable to cope with his age and Pepper getting a boyfriend.[2] Before filming began, Downey revealed that while the film was not an adaptation of Demon in a Bottle, it was more about the "interim space" between the origin and the Demon story arc.

POSTER: Stunning New 9 Poster...

So there are few films that I get really excited for in a given year. This year you have 500 Days of Summer, Public Enemies, Where The Wild Things Are, and Moon, just to name a few. Well, a film that is looking to make its way into that list, if it's not already there, is the animated film, 9.

With a superb cast (icluding my girl Jennifer Connelly), great pedigree (produced by Tim Burton, blah, and Timur Bekmambatov, awesome), and some really awesome trailers, this film is looking to be one of the better animated films of this year. It comes to us from Shane Acker, whose short film of the same name, which was Oscar nominated, brings us this tale of 9 dolls who attempt to save humanity. Well, to add to that list of awesome promotional material, you can add this amazing new poster. It's the first official poster from Focus Features, the company behind the film, and the design is stunning. It's gorgeous, and the style of the poster (and the film itself), along with the newly announced PG-13 rating really has me excited. Check it out below!

9 takes place in a world parallel to our own, in which our very humanity is threatened. A group of rag dolls living a post-apocalyptic existence find one of their own, 9, who may be the key to their survival.

9 is both written and directed by visionary filmmaker Shane Acker, of two previous animated shorts The Hangnail and The Astounding Talents of Mr. Grenade. The screenplay was co-written by Acker and Pamela Pettler (Corpse Bride, Monster House). 9 was first an animated short that debuted in 2005 and received an Oscar nomination. Focus Features will be debuting 9 in theaters everywhere starting on September 9th.

TRAILER: International Trailer for 500 Days of Summer...

Today has seen quite a bit of news, but none may be nearly as big, or as interesting to yours truly as this new international trailer for the hotly anticipated release, 500 Days of Summer. While the trailer does paint a more traditional portrait for the film, it's obviously an attempt to sell the film to the three people that aren't already insanely excited for the film, and for that it works. It's still a phenominal trailer for what is easily my most anticipated romantic comedy of the year, and maybe one of the 5 most anticipated films I have for the rest of the year. From the cast, to the crew, to the already ipmossibly awesome trailers and soundtrack, I can't say enough good things about this film. Just see the damn thing!

The film is told primarily in flashbacks/forwards, which is kicked off by the break up between the leads, Summer (Zooey Deschanel) and Tom (Joseph Gordon Levitt), and it goes through their relationship, and Tom's struggle to get her back. Check out the new trailer below and see the film when it hits theatres from Fox Searchlight on July 17th!

NEWS: Liam Neeson and Bradley Cooper Join A-Team...

A while back, there was a rumor that took the internet by storm. IESB reported that, back in May, Bradley Cooper was getting ready to join the cast of the Joe Carnahan directed adaptation of the hit TV series, A-Team. Cooper then denied the report as actors are wan to do, but now it seems like that may be true.

Variety is reporting that Cooper is indeed in discussions to take up the role of Lt. Templeton “Faceman” Peck in Carnahan’s A-Team adaptation. However, what makes the report all the more interesting is that joining him in the realm of "in discussions" is Liam Neeson. In talks to play the lead, Col. John “Hannibal” Smith, it looks like the project is begining to take shape, in hopes of making it to shoot later this summer.

Both actors are currently on the tips of everyone's tounges with their recent hits, with Coopers turn in the subpar (it gets lower in my books the further I am away from it) Hangover, and Neeson's badass turn in the actually solid actioner, Taken, so it should come as no surprise that these two are being locked into many big budget roles. Also, it certainly helps that they are both perfect for their respective roles. I like both actors, an Carnahan is definitley a well versed action director.

That said, while I'm not a fan of the TV series at all really, I don't think this film will be welcome with open arms by critics. Really, someone is going to recast a role made famous by Mr. T? Who is similar to Mr. T? I will answer that with a simple answer. Mr. T. Oh, and it totally gets my hyphy for the project knowing that the writer behind Hitman, Skip Woods, is writing the film. That makes me SO excited. It's not like he also helped write the schlock fest that was Wolverine.

Expect much more news on this story as it develops.

NEWS: Bryce Dallas Howard's Quarterlife Crisis...

It looks like the apple doesn't fall far from the tree when it comes to film.

Bryce Dallas Howard has sold her first feature length script, for a film entitled The Originals, to her father, Ron Howard, and his production company, Imagine Entertainment.

Penned along with her writing partner Dan Charbeneau, THR has described the film in their article on it as "an ensemble film about a group of twentysomethings who reconvene for a weekend in New York after learning that the teacher who shaped their childhoods has fallen into a mysterious coma". The film was conceived as a way to explore the quarterlife crisis that befall so many twentysomethings.

There is much talk as to who may helm the project, but it seems likely that it may be her father's next project, or a project in his pipeline. The writing duo did end up showing the project to Ron Howard, and as THR also reported, he seemed to think that it may be a good antidote to the huge budget projects hes been working on for the past few years.

However, nothing is really set in stone, which always makes for an interesting discussion. Who would YOU like to see take the helm of this project. Me personally, I would love to see Darren Aronofsky or say Rian Johnson work on this after the two finish their next projects (RoboCop and Looper respectively). What about you?

Recently, at the World Wide Developer's Conference, Apple announced a new version of the iPhone, called the iPhone 3GS. POSTER: Winged Creatures...

So today, FirstShowing happened to get a look at one of the coolest posters I've seen all year. It comes to us from the indie realms, and is for a film called Winged Creatures. It's the newest film from Australian director Rowan Woods, and while the film is going under the name Fragments here in the states, this is not a US poster. The poster may be a little straightforward and simple, but it's so aesthetically pleasing, that it's one that I had to post about. While the film has gotten mid to low level buzz coming out of the festival circuit when it hit late last year, I'm still interested if only for this badass poster, and the phenomenal cast. Check out the poster below!

Winged Creatures is about a group of strangers in a small town who form a unique relationship with each other after surviving a random shooting at a California diner. We ran an early trailer for it back in 2008. As you get a glimpse of on the poster, the ensemble cast for Winged Creatures includes Kate Beckinsale, Dakota Fanning, Jackie Earle Haley, Jennifer Hudson, Josh Hutcherson, Guy Pearce, and Forest Whitaker. Thanks to our friends at IMPAwards for finding this poster and uploading it.

TRAILER: Hung SFW TV Trailer...

This may be it. Finally, Thomas Jane may have his much deserved break out role.

Most of you will know Jane from either the much maligned Punisher adaptation in which he starred as the titular character, or the much AWESOME Frank Darabont directed adaptation of the Stephen King novella, The Mist. However, he's not really a house hold name.

That said, HBO is banking on that changing rather quickly, with his new show, Hung. I've been seeing trailer after trailer about this television show on the network, and am beyond intrigued. The premise is very interesting, and is game for quite a bit of comedy: Jane plays a high-school basketball coach / gym teacher who realizes that he can become a star by exploiting his giant…sexual apparatus, and the cast and crew are great. Anne Heche co-stars as his "pimp", and the main reason I'm interested in this show is that it's being produced by Election/Sideways director, Alexander Payne, who also helmed the pilot. Along with the upcoming season of True Blood (THIS Sunday, I will have a review up Monday), this show is why I think HBO will be having a huge summer season. So without further ado, check out the trailer for Hung, which premieres June 28th.

NEWS: Marvel Updates Their Upcoming Slate...

Over the weekend, FirstShowing attended a special Producer's Guild of America panel on producing Marvel films, where head honcho of Marvel Kevin Feige, updated us on his companies slate of films, with quite a few interesting pieces of news...

- The one thing they really want to bring back from Iron Man for the sequel, is the films great sense of humor, so expect a pretty funny action film...

- They are about halfway done with shooting the film...

- Scarlett Johansson's character in the film supposedly has "two sides." She comes in as an aid/assistant for Stark, and ultimately ends up as Black Widow...

- Feige confirmed the previous reports of Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston being cast as Thor and Loki in the upcoming Thor film...

- Kenneth Branaugh is not allowing the actors to use Shakespearean language like the comic book often did...

- Feige confirmed that Captain America will be primarily a period piece set during WWII...

- It's a "safe bet" that we will be seeing Caps trusty sidekick, Bucky, when the film roles around in 2012...

- He also said that Edgar Wright will be doing a rewrite of his script for Ant Man, a film he's still schedule to helm, after production of Scott Pilgrim is done...

- Which leads me to the last note, they will be announcing ANOTHER film for release in 2012 in the upcoming months, and while there is not hint at to what it may be, since he basically announced Ant Man, it's something else, that no one knows about yet...

What do you all think the film could be? Sub-Mariner (starring Zachary Quinto of course)? Hulk 2? Spidy 5? I personally think the best bet may be Dr. Strange, since there have been quite a few hints at that film being put into production, but then again, that's just me. What do you all think?
