10 New Disney Films...

So, Disney has just sent out a statement discussing their upcoming films, all the way into 2012. Thanks to Yahoo! for this pretty big piece of news. For all you Toy Story fans and Cars fans (are there any of you out there?), you will especially enjoy this.

"The Walt Disney Studios previewed 10 animated movies on Monday that it will release during the next four years, including further installments in the “Toy Story” and “Cars” series and two new fairy tales. With the exception of “Wall.E,” a robot love story opening on June 28, and “The Princess and the Frog,” a hand-drawn animated fairy tale set in New Orleans and due to open Christmas 2009, the remaining eight movies will be made in digital 3-D.

The first Disney digital 3-D movie for release is “Bolt,” the story of a dog of the same name who thinks he has superhero powers. John Travolta gives voice to Bolt while hit teen singer/actress Miley Cyrus is voicing Bolt’s owner Penny in the movie, due to open on November 26.

“Up,” the story of an unlikely 78-year-old adventurer and his 8-year-old sidekick, is due to be released on May 29, 2009.

“Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2″ are due to be re-released in digital 3-D on October 2, 2009 and February 12, 2010 respectively, while “Toy Story 3″ is due to hit screens on June 18, 2010.

The classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale “Rapunzel,” about a girl trapped in a tower whose long golden hair is the only way for anyone to climb up to her, will be released at Christmas 2010.

Next comes “Newt,” a story of the last two blue-footed newts on the planet that aims to show that love is not a science, which is due to hit screens in summer 2011.

“The Bear and the Bow” — an action-adventure about a royal family in rugged and mythic Scotland — is slated to open Christmas 2011 starring the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Billy Connolly and Emma Thompson.

“Cars 2,” in which Lightning McQueen and his best friend Mater bid to take on the world’s fastest cars, is due for release in summer 2012.
“King of Elves,” based on a 1953 short story by Phillip K. Dick, will hit screens at Christmas 2012. "

DVD Pick of The Week...

So, I was just hanging out, and then my girlfreind said that she was back from the mall. Now, she got me There Will Be Blood with some money I gave her, and she also got me the Coen Brother's gift set for my birthday, and it came today. So, in honor of that, I think I am going to start giving weekly, maybe on Wednesdays, a weekly DVD pick. Today's DVD pick is Blood Simple. This is probably the two's masterpiece (although Fargo may have something to say about that), and I recomend that everyone go out and rent, no BUY this film. It's one of the best modern film-noirs, if not the best, and it's in your best interest to go check this out now.

Go see There Will Be Blood too...it's bloody brilliant...

Teaser news...

Ice Age 3 Teaser Trailer...

A little bit of news...

Okay, today so far has been a slow day, but here is a few of the bigger stories from today...

-In "W" cast news, Tony Blair will be played by Ioan Gruffud, who is probably best known as Mr. Fantastic from the Fantastic Four...another great bit of casting...I probably should stop talking about this as now it's just overhyped...

-"Milk" is allegedly near the end of it's filming, and if I have to say so, this may be one of the bigger films come Oscar time...

-Speaking of Oscar talk, looks like Valkyrie will have to wait until 2009...it's offically been delayed to Feburary 13th, 2009...

-Robosapien fans stand up and cheer, your little robotic freind is set to get it's very own film...That's about it for right now, so, check back later tonight for more news and notes if anything comes up...

There Will Be Blood...

This film is loosely based on an Upton Sinclair novel called "Oil!" So right there you know what it is going to be about. It is the story of an oil tycoon named Daniel Plainview (played by Daniel Day-Lewis, more on him later), who discovers that their is an "ocean of oil" below the are that he is in. As the story grows, so does his capitalistic insanity, and want for more money and oil. Along the way he meets a young pastor (played great by Paul Dano, coming off his good role in Little Miss Sunshine) who does not see eye to eye with the tycoon and fears for not only his family, but his church. That is all I want to say about the plot, because I went in pretty much blind about the entire film, and it really really helped me get into it.

This film is absolutely stunning. It begins with this almost silent (minus some grunting) film and really gets you into the man and myth that is Daniel Plainveiw. It's almost like a D.W. Grifith film. We are watching this man become fused into this capitalistic world. And then when he says "I am an oil man", I just got kinda excited. And what I thought would end up happening didn't. He (Paul Thomas Anderson) doesn't go into the Hollywood, thriller mode. He keeps it grounded in reality and makes a perfect choice. Also, with that "I am an oil man" statement, which we hear multiple times, we don't get to see who he is talking to, or the group that he is talking to for a while into each speach. And you know what, it doesn't matter. To Daniel Plainview, each town is the same. Each person is the same. This is a great little character discussion.

This is an absolutely gorgeous film with one monster performance. Daniel Day-Lewis gives what I am calling right now the strongest and heaviest performance of this century so far. He is a tour de force on that silver screen. And, it's not only a big performance, but everyone knows a person just like Daniel Plainveiw. A person who deals in absolutes. We can understand this character more that way.

However, this strength leads to a hinderence in other characters performances, Paul Dano's character mainly. He trys his hardest to match wits, but just falls short. Maybe it was meant for Dano's preacher to be a less than good one, but it just bothered me a little bit. That is the main quable that I had with this film. Also, with the first two thirds being so damn amazing, the third act almost shouldn't have happened. It was a little bothersome. It wasn't so much that it wasn't good, I loved the ending, it just seemed out of place. PTA seems to give Daniel Day too much range to roam. It's not a bad engind, just one that may have been a little out of place. That standing, this ending will leave you talking about this film forever. It is such an interesting ending, that the character development, especially in the HW character doesn't really stand up. The last couple of lines are so intense and really I don't wanna say anything, but if anyone sees this (and if I see one more week where Alvin and the Chipmunks is in the top 10, someone will die) I would like to hear what you think about the last line especially.

With that said, this is one of the best, possibly the best film I have seen all year. It is a sweeping epic and is much more than a film. It is an experience. Paul Thomas Anderson proves himself as one of the most exciting directors working today. He made a film that is wholly original, thought provoking and tracendent. I can't wait to see what he does next.

Now, heres the debate. What is the better film, No Country For Old Men, or There Will Be Blood? If anyone reads this and has seen both, I would like to hear what you think. I personally think that they are both amazing masterpieces. I do have one problem with TWBB that I don't with No Country. I think the performances as a whole are better in No Country. Granted, Daniel Day-Lewis is phenominal, but Paul Dano, and especially the guy who plays the adult HW are kind of lacking. However, I do give There Will Be Blood the edge for the sheer audacity and ambition of this Citizen Kane-esque masterpiece. So, if I had to pick one, I would go with TWBB...what about you? Any thoughts?

Leatherheads...

So, it's a Monday night. Clover has class, I have nothing to do, and so, I decide to go to the movies. Then I have a debate...21, or Leatherheads. So, I decide to go with Leatherheads...I like Georgey boy, Zellwegger is kind of hot in a model-who-just-ate-a-lemon way, and I am a pretty big sports fan. Now, the big question is, was it worth my time?Leatherheads is the story of football hero Dodge Connolly whose team has just gone under. One day, he hears about a young hotshot Princeton student who is a huge star, and war hero. He decides to go out and meet the guy. When he gets to the hotel he is meeting him at, he looks upon a stunning young journalist who is out to make a name for herself by bringing down the allegedly war heroes story. Now, when these two cross paths, the chemistry flies. Dodge offers the star, Carter Rutherford a spot on his fledgling team. He says yes and off they go. With a new governing body in football, a mystery into Carter's past, and a romantic triangle, this is a plot that, if you let it, will let you fall right into its web. Is that a good thing though?

For about 2/3rds of the flick, it definitely was. There are a lot of things good about this film. First off, Clooney and Zellwegger have truly amazing chemistry. There interchanges are really fun to watch. It's almost noir-esque, and it really works for this film that's set in mid 20's Chicago. It's almost like a solid prequel to the Cohen’s O' Brother Where Art Thou. Clooney's character is a carbon copy of his character from that also great film. The script deserves a lot of this credit. It's also written by amazing sports journalist Rick Reilly who always does the back page of SI, and it's a pretty solid first outing. The cinematography is also pretty good. It's all in the sepia sort of colors, a very autumnal color scheme, which is perfect for this fall sport flick. The supporting cast also gives stellar performances. The biggest thing is that this shows that Clooney is indeed a good director. If you didn’t know that from his two previous amazing efforts, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, and Good Night and Good Luck, than this should cover it. It’s not even close to those other two flicks, but it is indeed solid, although there are a couple of problems.

I simply have two problems with this movie. First off, the performances from John Krasinski and his agent played by Jonathan Pryce are simply laughable. There tone is just so off, and this film really had almost a split personality. For one second it wants to talk about the glorification and necessity that the U.S. has with its war heroes, and then it wants to almost be a commentary on government with the discussion of the instillation of a new governing body and new rules in pro football, and it all just seemed a little heavy handed. Finally, and least importantly, the second act did kind of drag, and it really got me checking my watch, but then Clooney and Zellweger got back on screen, and I got back in the movie. This is one that you should definitely try and get out to. At least worth a rental in 3 months. I give it 8/10 or 3.5 out of 5 stars.

Go see something good!

Hate to say I told you so...

Thandie Newton has been signed to play Condoleeza Rice in the upcoming flick that I can't stop talking about I guess, "W"...Brilliant casting, I think so.

Other news...
-A Wicker Man sequel has been canceled...finally, one for Hollywood!
-Speaking of canceling movies, Warner Brothers has dropped the Bryan Singer produced horror flick, Trick R Treat...
-Ray-Ban is set to launch a line of designer 3-D glasses...
-And finally, check out this trailer to the new film from City of God and Constant Gardener director Fernando Mierielles...looks like it could be interesting...

Dance Bot...

Hey guys...this isn't a movie note or anything...just a quick little thing to have you all check out. I was messing around with some of Clover's manipulatives for her teaching class, and, as I was creating a pretty amazing beast of a figurine, she had the bright idea to do some stop motion. Also, it works as a test for her camera, as I hope to shoot some shorts with it later on...it's not the best, but it works. So, here it is...Dance Bot, Episode 1...probably the only one...the song is pretty bad ass...

Also, I am still taking ideas for some fun stuff to do here. Maybe a weekly DVD that I can check out and have you guys watch too, and then we can have a discussion on it, or movies you want or top 10's you want. So post away. Also, I won't be posting this weekend, so I'll have a top 10 tomorow night, with that days news and notes. Go see something good!

Some news...possible reviews...

Hey guys! First off, thanks for the comments on the last post...it was a fun one to do, and I would love to hear more on it. It's been a slow week, so here are just a few of the bigger notes that I came across...

-Amanda Righetti has landed the lead female role for the upcoming Friday the 13th remake. She's been on a bunch of little sitcoms and dramas in guest roles, but nothing big. I'm really not looking forward to this remake...
-Javier Bardem is out of Francis Ford Coppolla's upcoming film Tetro...he's been replaced by Carmen Maura
-Final Destination 4 has had a plot leak...it's set to be in 3:D and parts have been released for the casting calls and auditions...
-Bill and Ted are set to get a remake...The duo are looking to come back on screen in a remake as 10th graders...Keanu has also said that he is thinking of making a guess spot...though the phone booth will be replaced with a cell phone...can you get service during the American Revolution? Hopefully they won't have nextel...
-Speed Racer is going to close the Tribeca film festival...
-The Aqua Teen Hunger Force film is being streamed at the cartoon network website http://www.adultswim.com/index2.html so, go check that out...
-Finally, Chris O'Donnel has joined the cast of Max Payne...

Okay, so, with this being a pretty busy week, I have a couple of notes for the upcoming week...First off, There will be no posts on Saturday, and maybe Sunday. I will do the box office post, upcoming flicks, and a top 10 on Sunday night or Monday afternoon. Also, not much has been coming out, so you might relize that I haven't had a review in a while. However, that will change in the following week. I plan to review; In Bruges, 21, Leatherheads, and maybe Shine a Light...so there will be more reviews. Also, any top 10's you think would be fun to do, I would love some ideas. I have a few I want to do, but I don't want to run out, so the more the better. Thanks guys, and go see something good!

Top 10 Overrated films...a few bits of news...

Okay, so this list is a tough one to talk about. I in no way mean that these following 10 films are bad...well, a couple are to me, but thats not what I mean. I simply don't think that these films are as great as many people say they are. So, don't burn me for this...also, it's a slow ass news day, so why not spark up some controversy, eh? Heres the list...

10. Juno
9. Lord of The Rings Trilogy
8. Little Miss Sunshine
7. Star Wars Trilogy
6. American Beauty
5. Chicago
4. Monty Python and The Holy Grail
3. Donnie Darko
2. Forrest Gump
1. Saving Private Ryan

Alright...let the verbal massacre begin...

Here are just a couple of notes that have caught my attention...

-Universal Studios has gotten the rights to create a Neil Armstrong film. The bought the rights to the non fiction book First Man: The Life of Neil A. Armstrong, so expect that to come out in the coming year or so.
-I am happy to hear that Roger Ebert is going to return to writing reviews for the Chicago Sun-Times...coming from an aspiring film critic, I want to say that I am glad to hear one of my idols is doing well after complications caused by a Janurary surgery.
-Halo has allegedly gotten a new script. Halo has been in limbo for about two years, but now it looks like a new script has been shopped around in Hollywood, so more on that later...

Now, go see something good!

10. The Other Bolyen Girl
9. Charlie Bartlett
8. Run, Fatboy, Run

3. Funny Games
2. My Blueberry Nights
1. Paranoid Park

My big misses: In Bruges, City Of Men, Snow Angels, Chicago 10, U2 3D, Teeth (check out the story behind that hahahaha), and 4 Months, 3 Weeks, and 2 Days...

4. Wall-E
3. Iron Man
2. Indiana Jones: Kingdom of The Crystal Skull
